Eating out is not one of my favorite things to do, but I do agree to meet 2 good friends for our birthday lunches.

We always check to see if our favorite table is empty, or ask to be seated at a table in the most empty section farthest away from everyone else.   I hate having someone seated directly behind me, and also hate being seated in the busiest section of the restaurant.

It never fails that as soon as our food arrives and we start eating, our location becomes the busiest section of the restaurant!

I've seen it done at other than fast-food restaurants too.  One  I never returned to.

I haven't been in Denny's in many years - but they were notorious for doing that.

Then speak up when it happens.

Sheesh.

Why does this call for a “sheesh”?

I'm wondering the same thing.

I think fast food restaurants have a lot of turnover, and need to keep cleaning constantly. So you don't like it if they clean when you're nearby?  What is the solution?  What if everyone didn't like cleaning to take place when they're in the next booth?

I would expect that from a fast food place.

I agree. Sheesh!! Right now someone is caring for a dying loved one, someone is trying to make the money they made at the fast food restaurant cover their bills, someone is being abused by their spouse, a child is going to bed hungry. Sheesh! Stay home and eat and send the money you save to a charity.

So do you ever complain about anything.  I hope not.  At least not until you solve world hunger and other societal ills.

I worked in fast food all through high school and college, and I can tell you there is no way to not clean where someone is.

People are in and out all day, and expect to see clean tables and floors and window glass.

There are ways to be less intrusive with especially the chemicals and spraying, but businesses aren't taking the time to train people in depth these days.

While I totally understand the OP's post, I know that if they weren't cleaning around customers and the place was a pigsty, that would be a complaint too.
