My daughter and I were at the mall today and heard a crying/screaching noise from the bushes. Turned out that it was a little black kitten with a missing front leg. It was clearly in distress, so we had to get him and take him to the vet.
His missing leg is probably from trauma awhile ago as it has healed. Given the part that is left, the vet thinks it's 'trauma' vs genetic.
He's seems to be in fairly good shape, but the test for FIV came back positive. The vet says that they don't usually do that test so young and there's a slight chance that it's left over from the momma (nursing) or perhaps from the trauma. Either way, since we have another cat in the house, we are keeping him separate until we have him retested.
So, here we have this beautiful tiny baby who is snuggled on my daughter's lap right now. He has totally calmed down and is quite comfortable...was purring before he fell asleep. Don't know what my husband will say as we already have a cat and two dogs.
Now to my question, the vet explained the risks of having an FIV cat in the home with another cat. When we went to Petco to get kitten food, the person that helped us said that she actually had a 'mixed' household and that the FIV cat lived for 15 years...her comment was 'don't give up on him just because he is FIV'. Have any of y'all dealt with this? The cat that we currently have used to have another cat with us and they never fought..but this is a boy cat..and I've never had a boy cat. Our other cat is about 8 years old. The big concern is the blood transfer (fighting/biting).
We will not 'give' him away unless we have a good place for him...but if that doesn't happen and my husband agrees to keep him, I'm just wondering if that' putting our existing cat in too much danger. How will this journey go dealing with FIV?
He's such a cutie!!!! Thanks for your thoughts.
