For months my girlfriend has been self diagnosing her 21 year old son with schizophrenia. He told me she knows the signs because it runs in her family.   She has been tirelessly trying to get him to the doctor without any success. She told me it’s very hard to get them to the doctor because they don’t think anything is wrong.

His behavior has been getting worse with paranoia episodes and violent outbursts, etc. And last night he tried to jump off a bridge. He is now on 72 hour lockdown.

I don’t know much about this disease but I’m hoping he gets the help he needs and can go on to live a normal life. Is that even possible?

It is heartbreaking to see the toll this is taking on their family. Thank you to all the prayer warriors here.

I assume he was baker acted (involuntarily committed). The problem with this illness is that with some, it’s impossible to get them help because they don’t feel anything is wrong with them.  My cousin has this illness and is on medication which has helped with the voices and paranoia, but he will never live a completely normal life.  Depending on the seriousness of his Illness and with the proper medication, I think some can lead a relatively normal life.  So much depends on their compliance with taking the medication though.

i have heard of this disease. I believe many years ago something like this happened to a far off cousin of mine. I was a young girl at the time, maybe 9-10 yrs old.

We were not allowed to speak with the girl, only met her once when we were visiting at my grandparents house and this lady was visiting with my grandparents too along with her parents.  I just remember that we were told to keep our mouths shut and not question her in the least.

Sending best wishes for your friend & her son.

A difficult disease, I have 2 friends dealing with the same issue; not for the faint of heart.
