My dear friend has a son with the same issues and it is hard he has to live with them.  Recently has stopped taking his meds and she was able to get him admitted to a psych unit for treatment.

The problem was she and her husband where excluded from the care planning meetings and medication education because he was over the age of 18 and he said "no do not bother my parents with my problem."    !!!!!!    She was out her mind with worry.  she did not even know he was being discharged unit he called to say come pick me up.

He continues to live with them and she administered his meds and confirms he swallows them daily.  She and her husband are finally going to take a trip together and she has already hired someone (a RN) to watch over him while they are away.

He works and has a good job, but he MUST take his meds.

PS she also hired an attorney to draw up the paper work so that she and her husband have the necessary rights to be involved in his medical care even when the mental illness takes over and he says wild things.

I wish only the best for your friend.

Prayers are being sent. This would be rough. Hopefully they will get the right combination of medicines.  It will take some time.
