Re: Renter or owner -- a host's comment

Sometimes you are at a loss for words, just can't say anymore about the color, style, price and your mind goes off on something else and you try to reel it in but it goes south.

Happens to the best of us but of course we're not selling handbags.

Honestly, I do not believe much of what hosts or vendors say.

I owned two homes in the SF Bay Area.  I now rent an apartment in Manhattan.

There's no way on this earth I'd ever own again!   Totally overrated!

And, there's no way on this earth I'd ever spend that kind of money on a handbag.

@ECBG

I find joy in owning my D&B but also in my way cheap bags. Joy doesn’t come from how much one pays.

Regarding renting vs owning compared to handbags, I didn’t see it but it sounds like a very poorly done example.

I'm afraid I have no idea which handbag was being presented when she went on this tangent.

She was definitely not talking about renting handbags. :-) She was saying that owning this D&B bag is like owning your own residence, whereas owning some lesser bag is equivalent to renting a residence. The implication is that renting a residence is inferior to owning a place.

Whether I feel that home ownership is better than renting, I doubt that I would make that analogy in "mixed" company.

It was just...odd. She may very well have started down this road before realizing where it went.

It sounds like something was misfiring! I hate it when I realize my mouth is in the middle of saying something strange and it is too late to take it back! lol

Gee-I actually like Vera Bradley bags so I guess I'm living in a basement apartment somewhere.  LOL

@willdob3I didn't think the example was particulary outstanding either.  'Jest sayin"!!!Smiley Happy

Re: Renter or owner -- a host's comment

That analogy doesn't work.  Now you have me wondering what ditso host said that.  I agree, there's nothing magic about a 30 year mortgage and I don't anyone feels good about making monthly mortgage payments until years down the road when they have built up significant equity and can see the end of it coming.  Also, owning home is NOT the best thing financially for many people.  Sometimes renting is the best option financially or for lifestyle.  There are apartments here that rent for $10,000 a month; someone should tell that host that those women wouldn't be caught dead carrying Dooney's.  I love my Dooney's but contrary to what QVC wants us to believe, Dooney is not luxury brand.  Not even close.
