Re: Renewing my driver's license tomorrow

Here in Florida if your name is different than the name on your birth certificate you must show the paper trail to prove why. I have been married twice so I needed my birth certificate,my first marriage certificate, my first husband's death certificate,& my second marriage certificate. If you apply for a passport you would also need the same documents.I found it helpful to take my passport to the driver's license office.

@gidgetgh I am in Georgia and I renewed mine in January. I went through pure H*LL doing it.  I have held a Georgia driver's license since 1987. I had renewed twice after getting divorced. Despite having all the required documentation supporting my name and address and the fact that the name on my driver's license was correct. My name reflected my married name which I kept after divorcing, so there was no "name change" since getting my license the first time. I was told I must produce a marriage license and divorce papers according to the "woman in charge" that day. .I have been divorced since 1993, and finding that paperwork would have been "quite a chore."    Not to mention having to drive  back to the DMV and refill out the paperwork all over again.

Thankfully, a very nice man working the next station over called me to him and told me to "hang on for 10 minutes". "Woman in Charge" went on break, and he did my license renewal for me. He thought she was being ridiculous too.

I suggest you bring your social security card too, in case you get "overzealous person" assisting you.  I think that was what helped the man assisting me push it through.

Good luck to you and I hope it goes smoothly.

Actually, she was right and he was wrong.

In Pa. you can go to the county offices and for a nominal fee they will copy all the papers you need, birth cert, death cert, and marriage licenses and I suppose divorce papers. Then you can just keep them together in one safe place for future needs.

Re: Renewing my driver's license tomorrow

Is GA a "real ID" state yet?  Perhaps you'll only have to do this the one time and then once your have a "real ID" future renewals will be easier.

In Washington State  they will give a driver license to ANYONE including illegals.  We have a lot of those here.

I'm curious how you know if a person is a LEGAL or an ILLEGAL  alien or if they are a resident or just a visitor to our country?

Do you have a Star license?  You need at least FOUR additional documents to get a STAR license.

You need all that c r a p to upgrade to Star.

Which I am NOT going to do.

Re: Renewing my driver's license tomorrow

good luck with renewal.

I just did my DL in april, it was easy this time around. My state did all this bring this/that for renewal in 012. that was a hassle. took about 1 hour to get all that logged into the file for the 012 DL renewal.

I was in-out in april in less than 15 minutes.

Georgia requires all sorts of information that they didn't when I last renewed 10 years ago, online.

Here's what I'm taking with me tomorrow to get it renewed:

birth certificate

current license of course

2 different bank statements in my name

credit card bill

two utility bills in my name

2 magazines in my name

I just finished doing the online pre-check in where I happily changed my weight down (yeah!!).

I think I'll go to bed early so I can get some rest so I'll be ready to wait my turn in line which could take anywhere from one minute to an hour or two.

They caution you to to bring all this stuff with you (especially the utility bills). We schlepped all this stuff last year when my husband renewed his and they didn't look at anything other than his birth certificate.

______

What if you don't have all that?  A lot of people go,paperless with bills, some Seniors live in complexes where utilities are included. I don't subscribe to magazines.

Re: Renewing my driver's license tomorrow

Mine is good here in Texas until 2021 and if they decide to require magazine subscriptions than they will be out of luck.  I have none.

We only list eye color, height, and whether male or female, no weight required at all.

Love getting in the mail when time to renew but I know every other time or so you do have to go update the photo.
