@Icegoddess @Desertdi Our DMV was awful about the Real ID requirements.  I was at the point when I couldn't renew on line and had to go in person. I had married when I was 19 and divorced 7years later.  I had my original divorce decree to show my marriage information and that I didn't change my name at that time.  I then had everything else including my marriage certificate showing my current name, etc.  Well, I had to get a certified copy of my first marriage certificate even though the divorce decree had all the date and name information about the marriage.  I had to contact the county to request a certified copy of my certificate.   I finally received the certified certificate that I had to pay for and took everything to the DMV again.  She examined everything.

Our DMV's are always full and one window was tied up with one person the entire hour I was there.  Then, much to my dismay,  I had to get my pic updated on the real ID license even though I was told I could use the one done when I renewed 4 months earlier.  So I had to wait in line for the camera and the print out again.  Seriously.

@Jk9

After reading what you went through...I am definitely NOT going to "try again"...

I also had a strange thing happen at my former employer.   After 15 years, I had to visit HR to replace my worn-out  ID badge.   HR claimed that I DIDN'T WORK THERE.

It's "possible" that I was on the payroll of a separate division of the company...  (The place employed 178,000 people).

Anyway....THEY KEPT PAYING ME(!!!)       di

I got my Real ID years ago but still use my passport when traveling which is a whole lot less since COVID.

I remember when I got my first passport I think it was $50 or $60, the price now is absolutely ridiculous.

The current renewal price is $130 which averages to $13 a year.

I just renewed my passport online. It expires in two days. It was pretty easy renewing online.

I wonder if the required documents vary from state to state because I needed My SS number, birth certificate, and 2 bills (utility or credit card) that were sent to me at my address.  In my state you can get your licence renewed at any AAA office and so I never went near the DMV and was in and out in 10 minutes.

There used to be horror stories about visiting the DMV, but honestly the last 2 or 3 times I had to go there the wait was minimal and (especially for my state) the whole experience was reasonably efficient!

I don't have a passport, and I used to go to Canada yearly until they required them for U.S. citizens.

Nowadays if I visit my sister about 75 minutes away

in a neighboring state I consider that foreign travel!
