I remember it well. Our teachers claimed it gave us an incentive to do better.

My high school publically announced the honor students names over the loud speaker when doing school wide announcements.
Most teachers handed out test results/papers in grade order from highest to lowest. The other teaches handed out results in alphabetical order.
We were also assigned classes depending on grade average - example: the smartest kids were in 8A or 8B depending....C students (average) were all in 8C through 8H....and below average D/F students were in the last alpha numeral classes. Special needs or those with learning disabilities and behavior problems were all in their own class (generally a much smaller class where the teacher to student ratio was very low and it allowed for more one to one teacher student time.
That was a long time ago.....a lot has changed since my high school days.

In college, our grades for each class were posted on the door where that particular class took place. And they were posted by SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS!!! Our SS #s were our school IDs.
