One HUGE difference from the "good old days" and the present is our access to round the clock news - on television - radio-internet -twitter - you name it. Once upon a time, the media switched off at night, that's no longer so. We can see wars and crime in "real time."
The good old days had its share of problem's, we just didn't hear about them. Unless it was something of a horrific nature, people in Pennsylvania didn't hear about what was going on in say, Oregon.

A lot worse! More people, more criminals. And more types of crimes.

I don't think anyone said we were kids, but maybe I missed that.
What would kids have been doing walking the streets alone at night? Shame on their parents if they were.
We were kids in the 60's, i said that, because we were!! We did not think as adults, all that did go on back then, was not in our minds much ,because we were kids.

Well, yes. That was my point.
More types? Yes to that, also. There was no proliferation of assault guns back in the day.

You said "we."
The OP has said she is in her 70s at this point in time. She and some others here were not children in the 60s and 70s.

You'd think mankind would get better, wiser, kinder over time, wouldn't you? It is sad.

We did too. We rode our bikes and often times in the summer it was dark. Our bikes had a front headlight that usually didn't work.
I grew up in a small town in NJ.
When people talk about the good old days I think they refer to a time when during summer vacation, we left our houses after breakfast to play outside with no supervision. We rode our bikes for miles, often times it would have been impossible to communicate with help.
We did not have play dates. You played with anyone who was around. We didn't have bottles of water with us so we could stay hydrated. If we were lucky the water fountain at the playground was working.
I still walk alone here (a residential Jersey shore town) and in the city.
