Remember way back when QVC used to sell Weekly Reader Book Sets every year?
The same books that students could order from that paper flyer that teachers used to hand out in class?
They were such a great value. I think there were something like 10 or 12 hardcover books sold as a set for just a few dollars per book? It was an affordable way to build a child's home library and the set made a great gift for a new teacher or school library.
I am so dismayed to find out that most Costco locations in the U.S. have discontinued their book department. They will only sell books during the holiday season and not all year round. They used to offer wonderful discounts on so many fun and informative books for kids of all ages.
Is this a sign of the times when one of the largest retailers in our country no longer sells books?
As a teacher, this saddens me tremendously. Access to books is one of the strongest indicators of success for our youngsters in school and beyond.
I really hope that parents are taking their children to the library on a regular basis to keep our children focused on reading and off screens as much as possible.
One of the best things we can all do is to develop a love of reading in our kids.

i remember those weekly reader books. didnt qvc usually do them around this time of the year? it was a set of ten or twelve hardback books. great quality and made great gifts as a complete set OR broken up. i bought usually two or three sets every year and still have them for my grandkids.
i would keep an entire set for my kids and then break up the other set to give as gifts throughout the year.
bring them back QVC!

I was sorry to see the majority of books gone from Costco.
Though the book section at my Sam's Club seems smaller than the past I'm glad it's still available.
I enjoy that BJ's not only has many of their bestsellers at 20%off, they also occasionally have additional coupons usually for $3 off. Nice!

Thus far the Costco near me has continued to have books so far year round. Half are adult books and the other half are children's books. I live on Long Island, NY. I will be so disappointed if they discontinue them as I love to browse books and rarely leave the store without one. So grateful that my Mom took us to the library weekly to pick out our bedtime stories. She instilled in us a love of reading and my brother and I are still avid readers. I don't have children but my brother's children continue the love of reading. It is the one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child.

I have never been to a Costco in my entire life, but I certainly go to Barnes & Noble bookstore several times a month!
I also have access to multiple library systems, although I do not use them too much any more, but I do donate to my city public library.
I think Weekly Reader books were a great addition to the school experience.

I don't remember the sets - it was probably before I "found" QVC.
But I'm sad to hear Costco is not selling books. We don't have one near us, but we do frequent BJ's and I find a lot there. They stock the current bestsellers, which can sell out quickly, but they also offer specially priced books that were released a few years ago.
I get paperbacks and trade paperbacks mixed up. The ones they carry a lot are the "larger" ones. That's my favorite size to read! ![]()

I remember the Weekly Reader Books and purchased for my twin boys. We enjoyed reading them and one of my cherished memories of their childhood is reading to them, taking them to the library and bookstore ![]()

I have not noticed any decrease in the amount of books for sale in Costco or BJs. Maybe those states that instituted book bans in libraries and schools have reduced their availability.

I heard it was to reduce labor to employees. What a crock. What will they stop selling clothes because, that is the worst labor pull in the store@. every night or early morn, Costco employees spend hours re folding and putting merch out on clothing aisle. plus they have someone all day picking up there. This is a huge loss to publishers and such. The sales were quite a bit.
