@J Town Girl Welcome!🄰 YESSSS! I LOVEDā¤ļø walking to school with friends also and have SO many wonderful memories of that special time! When I reached high school, I had to take the bus to school in a neighboring city because it had a program for gifted students! I "joined" a new social circle, and looked forward to seeing my neighborhood friends when I got home!

I cried when my dear mother FORCED me to go, but am MOST appreciate now!😊 That was such a comforting memory, and I THANK you SO much for it!!!šŸ¤—šŸ’

grew up in Indianapolis. Remember on special occasions my mom dressed up little sister and me, (mid-late 1950s) and took us downtown. We would have a fancy lunch at L.S.Ayres dept store tearoom. I recall the ladies there wearing suits or dresses and always hats. Then to one of the big downtown theatres to see the latest Disney animated movie. I remember going to see Lady and the Tramp, Snow White and Cinderella. I got a Cinderella wristwatch when I was six or seven.

@smoochy & all: I loved going downtown for lunch and movies also.  I had to get a bath and dress up.
   Sometimes we rode the bus. The Palace theatre had a lady who played the organ. Before the movie we sang songs following the bouncing ball on the screen.
   Mama liked to get a piece of kitchen China for being among the first in line.

I don't remember the ice cream prices, but I do remember having to be home before the street lights came on.  I remember getting either 50 cents or a dollar for allowance and spending it all at 7-11 on candy.  I remember going on long trips and sleeping on the backseat's rear window's ledge(?)  I don't know the exact name of it.

@monicakm Welcome!🄰 Ahhhh! Your post made me think  of the excitement leading up to hours LONG road trips to see family sometimes during the holidays! We would be packed in like SARDINES; sometimes sitting on each others lap before seat belt laws prevented such; and simply did not care!😊 A few arguments occasionally ensued as can be expected from kids; even a few unlucky grown-ups!šŸ˜‚

That was such a heartwarming memory, and I SO THANK you for it!šŸ¤—

@smoochy,

I loved reading about your  tea room memories because my mother did that too. She would take my sister, and grandmother and I to the tea room for lunch at "Woodies" as my grandmother called Woodward & Lothrup and maybe sometimes to Lord and Taylors. I always felt so special and elegant and grown up.

Once my father took us to Wanamakers in Philadelphia at Christmas time. I will never forget how beautiful and grand it was with the biggest indoor Christmas tree that reached to the very highest ceiling. We actually ate hot chestnnuts from a street vendor that came in a little paper bag. It was cold out so I remember they tasted so good. What special memories.

I was probably seven years old when my mom would send me to the local pharmacy for a pack of cigarettes for her and one for my Daddy.  I would get some penny candy with the change.  The 1970s where indeed a fine time to be alive.

@SandySparkles It was my duty to put stamps in books after a grocery shopping trip.    Momma would save up the books and buy household items.
