Re: Remedy To Prevent Shoplifting

👏👏👏👏 I am in favor of ANYTHING that acts as a deterrent to crime! Enough is enough! It will not stop all of it, but it will HELP! I have encountered lockers in the front of some stores when traveling abroad in high tourist areas, and actually enjoyed the freedom of not having to worry about my backpack!😁

I received an email from a business in the midwest that I purchased from online.  They also have a brick and mortar store.  They indicated they are having a problem with shoplifting and need to institute something to prevent it.

They sell furniture, lamps, rugs, curtains, and assorted other pieces that are handmade.  My opinion is it is on the "upscale" side.

The following is part of the email:

"Effective January 1,2024, we will no longer allow large to over-sized purses or backpacks, nothing larger than 9" x 7". To make it as convenient as possible we will be providing brand-new secure lockers with a key near the front counter. This will keep your belongings secure and convenient for you."

If I walked into the store with a "larger" handbag (which I usually do carry) and advised to turn it in for lockup, I would most likely leave the store with a definite negative vibe.

Would this policy work for you in order to visit this store or not?

This wouldn't affect me because I don't carry a large handbag.

What REALLY annoys me is when stores have half their merchadise in locked glass cabinets!

While I sympathize with retailers, I am big on label reading and get glares from the employees in charge of the cabinets ... like they think I'm taking too long to read the labels or compare ingredients!  Very annoying.

Now a days, what do people actually need when they shop? At the most, their wallet, the least their phone or watch.

It will take a significant societal change for a return to less crime. In the meantime, I'm all for whatever it takes for small businesses to survive.

I sympathize with them but putting my tote in a locker is a big no for me.  When I'm out shopping I always carry my  LV Neverfull.  So I just wouldn't shop at that particular store.

I’ve never carried a large bag. The smaller the better.

I remember the college bookstore in the 1980s you had to leave your backpack in a cubbyhole at the front of the store. The irony is that the cubbies weren’t locked and no one stole your backpack.🤣

Agreed. These days I usually carry a tiny crossbody or wristlet when I shop, if that. Tired of store security following me around when I carry a honking big purse, or small shop owners watching me nervously as I shop. Tired of being a purse-snatching target. Tired of being a human pack animal. I love my big purses, which carry (nearly) everything I need to handle daily crisis. But purse-lite is nice.

For most people, just a watch isn't going to do it.

As usual the thieves spoil shopping for the honest person.  Stores have to take dramatic action and the majority of people will have to put up with it or they will be no more stores to shop in.  Yes I would shop there.

It wouldn't bother me. My preference would be to have a key to the box/locker my things were in.

Re: Remedy To Prevent Shoplifting

No matter what merchants do,until they have more power to deal w/shoplifting it will continue. A friend told me that the other day while shopping she reported some activity that she thought was suspicious, but the store did nothing.
