Re: Reaction to WalMart increasing sales of American Made items?

I shop at Walmart almost every week. It's the closest grocery store to me. I have no complaints about it. Too bad they don't go out of business; it would send the US economy into a tailspin. Maybe then people would appreciate having it in their communities.

Yep and it is called competition. Same tactics as WM uses with their vendors.

And as far as discussing here . . . in the past I can't even defend Costco cuz someone will pipe up and say they have an unfair advantage . . . they charge their customers to shop there.

Each company has their rightful place in the marketplace . . . and thank goodness we have the freedom to shop at one or the other or heaven forbid both. McD's does the same thing. Probably others too.

Well said, I too don't understand why people keep bringing up Costco, I suspect they don't have anywhere near the amount of customers as WalMart. If they are truly all that great, why the membership fee?

How did Americans make out before Wal Mart was born? IMO very well!

I applaud the communities who fight to keep them out, they are not wanted everywhere as some would think. It's been proven that they swallow up smaller stores that create empty stores in small towns.

Why the membership fee?

You have to really be great to have people pay just to shop in your stores....

I admire them for the way they treat their employees.

I guess that's one way to spin it, Costco is still a business that is fulfilling their bottom line, not saving humanity.

Why the debate over a warehouse club and a Discount company? One cares about their their employees and one doesn't.

But isn't it wonderful to see a company can do BOTH at the same time and be successful!

They save money for shoppers, have a great bottom line, and pay their employees a living wage...GREAT USA company.

That isn't quite true either. You pay to be a member and shop @ Sam's Club . . . and they aren't that great and owned by the same people as WM.

That said, I have memberships @ both because I like to buy certain items from each.

Hands down favorite though, is COSTCO all the way. Nicer stuff. Cleaner store. More helpful employees. Like I said, wished I'd have bought a few hundred shares of their stock. I still might buy some even though the price per share is high right now, wish they'd have a split, as it would eventually go back up where it is now and higher.

I'm not familiar with other warehouse type stores around the country, but they too charge, I believe, and I don't think they can match Costco and their employees and how well they are treated, Costco sets a pretty high bar.

But in comparison, although I haven't been to Wal-Mart in a couple of months . . . the WM employees are much, much older for the most part . . . except in the tire/battery installation section, but I don't buy those type items there . . . just passing by on way to sporting goods, same for other sections, most have older employees. Costco employees for the most part are much younger. Why is this? I have no idea? Maybe WM mostly older folks supplementing their retirement income that already have Medicare and SS incomes. Perhaps there are some stats out there on the world wide web on it. Not that big a deal but just casual observations at actual stores of actual employees.

What's wrong with a business treating their employees right ?

Here is my problem with ANYTHING sold in their stores.

They squeeze the manufacturers on price, to the point where some actually LOSE money on products they sell to Walmart.

If the manufacturer is getting pressured for lower and lower prices, then the workers will suffer re: wages and work conditions.

There was an interesting story on CNBC a while ago - a guy sold silk screened T shirts to Walmart - a HUGE order for a small American company. When all was said and done, he made very little profit and because of the size of the order, he had no capacity to sell to other retailers.

So he ended his Walmart contract, sells on-line and through small independent stores, makes a LOT more money and has been able to give his workers raises too!

Great post

Kraft foods, RCA, and Rubbermaid are just three companies which paid dearly for crossing Walmart.
