.......I'm doing pretty darn good considering....my foot and ankle are still really swollen......and yes Preds, I staying off it *said with fingers crossed*
.....go back in another week to find out IF they have to do surgery, but honestly I think I dodged that one......bruises are now starting to go from that purple/black to that gross yellow and purple.........I have never in my life seen a sole of a foot bruised.......no kidding, my whole foot starting about four inches above my ankle, including the sole of my foot was purple/black with the exception of the very end of my toes and big toe......I've managed the one crutch walk.......trust me, this takes some getting used to and it does NOT make sense to have the crutch on the good side....but it works, it really does, not to mention with one crutch you're not falling all the time which is a huge plus, thank you september for that advise, it helped me keep my sanity.......it doesn't hurt like it did, so it's getting better.
The only disheartening thing is...........when you get an injury, you hear the stories of people who have had the same type injury......and in this case, I keep hearing how long it takes to get back to "normal"........some people have said like a year......then you hear how cold weather bothered their ankle......I do not like being slowed down........I don't have the time to be slowed down.......I do NOT want to be slowed down.......that's the ONLY part of this whole deal that really twists my feathers....................................raven
Oh, that sounds like such a nasty break. I've been thinking of you and it's good to know you seem to be progressing well. I'm so lucky not to have broken anything (yet), but I know it's painful, a real hassle, and a long healing/recovery process. You're right about the experiences of others -- it seems to be so variable from one person to the next, but then it's hard to compare the injuries since they can be so different.
Here's hoping you heal quickly, don't need any surgery, and that this soon will be a distant memory.![]()

I'm glad you checked in, Raven, and that it looks like surgery won't be needed.
When I hadn't heard an update from you, I was a little worried that you might have been hospitalized to have it pinned.
But the bruising...wow! It sounds like you had a lot of soft tissue damage in addition to the breaks.
As for the healing process...it is different for everyone. Physical therapy (once the Dr. tells you it's ok) will actually help you get back to normal more quickly. It can be hard to fit into your schedule...I know you're busy...but even if you can just make it to one or two sessions a week...it will help. They'll give you exercises to do at home, too.
Keep up the positive attitude...that helps, too!

I had a couple of rough days........seemed like it got really bad and then BAM it was better.........still a whole lot of swelling but the pain is pretty much gone unless I step funny or step on something where there is two different heights............that will get your attention real quick, and not in a good way LOL.............I hate to admit but yeah I think I will need some PT time, because my calf muscle doesn't want to bend.......and I've tried to wiggle my toes........everything moves with the exception of the last two........but then it just may need more time...........but I really think at Monday's appt. he'll tell me I dodged any surgery.......mainly because I didn't break the ankle, I fractured it......now the metatarsals, those things.....well I tore those up and that's where most of the pain that is left is.........but I'm getting better and will be even better when I can throw this crutch away LOL........I've managed the one crutch walk really well AND I even have some speed now LOL.........but I'd still rather not have to mess with it........................................raven

Raven, I give you credit for being able to use a crutch. When I had knee surgery many, many years ago, I just hopped a lot and gimped along.
I have a two story house and would likely kill myself if I had to use crutches. I am a less than obedient patient

Raven, I am sorry to hear about your foot, but glad to hear that you are on the mend. Behave and do what the doctor instructs.

OMGosh raven! I almost forgot about your broken ankle.
It sounds like you're on the mend and thank goodness because, I know you have that ginormous job.
I am nearly 4 weeks postop knee arthroscopy and I'm still recovering. I have to realize I am nearly 61 although I still have a hard time with the "number". My two friends kept reminding me of the age yesterday as they saw me limping through the parking lot.
Patience is a virtue of which I am sorely lacking.
Keep up the good work - I'm happy you are better.

It sounds like you have what is called a simple fracture (although it might not seem simple to you) which usually heals without any surgery needed, or any need to insert pins or screws. So...that is good. I think a lot of people who have some of the problems you heard about, have them because of the surgically implanted metal parts.
Yes and, metatarsals are toes. My working career was for an orthopedic surgeon. The worst are the open fractures. Ouch!!!! My boss was on staff at a level I trauma center and I do believe we have seen it all and not in a good way!

On 7/16/2014 september said: Gooday, I didn't know you had arthroscopic surgery. I hope you get back on your feet asap, too. I know it's tough to not be able to move around the way you'd like to.
Yep ~ for some reason, I tore the meniscus (cartilage) in the left knee. I do believe it was too much stair climbing when we got home from Az. I babied the knee for 3 weeks and then finally had an MRI. A few weeks later I had the arthroscopy. I THINK it's taking a little too long to heal but, there is not much to do about it. It's not excruciating pain and it is most definitely better than before but I'm still not 100%.
Thanks for the well wishes.
