Rare video of seahorse giving birth

Wow!  Heart

Rare video shows male seahorse giving birth in nature

Seahorses are different from most animals when reproducing.

Most notably, the males are the ones who carry the developing embryos and give birth, while the females are simply responsible for laying eggs into a pouch on their partner's abdomen.

Meanwhile, the gestation period for White's seahorses is only three weeks long, but as many as 250 babies can be released during the delivery.

As a rare video of a wild birth shows, the tiny newborns can be seen emerging from the father's abdomen before getting swept away by the current.

Despite the high numbers of seahorses that are born at one time, conservationists remain concerned about the population, which faces risks from fishing activities.

Re: Rare video of seahorse giving birth

I have seen videos of male seahorses giving birth before on nature shows on tv.

It's cool to watch.

Thanks for sharing!

One of my favorite animals to be in the ocean with, when I was diving, and aside from the sharks of course, were the seahorses.    It was a rare treat to come across one.   Over the years I was fortunate to see quite a few.  I would just stop and watch them sway in the current, with their little tails wrapped around something.   So cute!  Smiley Happy

Re: Rare video of seahorse giving birth

Here in Florida, we have seahorses in our coastal waters.  I have encountered many devoted fishermen who are conservationists: they enjoy their sport, but they strive to protect sea life.  One of the ways these responsible sportsmen do that is by going idle speed or cutting off their engines in areas of the shallows where grasses can be seen, and by mangroves.  The biggest enemies as I see it are the jet skiers.

I am not against jet skis: my DH and DS enjoy ours, but they stay away from grassy areas and when they are in those places, they cut the engines and walk the vehicles to shore.

With all of the pollution being dumped into our waters, sea horses are high on the list of threatened species.

If you ever visit our beautiful state, you can rent jet skis and I sincerely hope you enjoy them-but please be aware of the sea grasses that are somebody's home.  If you want to go at high speed, please go out on the open water.
