Just watched him & Jean Paul Belmondo in a movie on TCM on Tuesday. Very handsome man. May he RIP.

"Smoldering" is right!  He was such a heart throb and figure of glamour, that he worried that that aspect would overshadow his considerable talent. 

 

Interestingly,  I just read that his own favorite actor was John Garfield-- he had great taste.  So many French artists had/ have very acute artistic perceptions.  RIP.
