@dooBdoo@Moonchilde I am so glad both of you sweet ladies posted your nice comments.  I really enjoyed the opening ceremonies!  It was a very nice presentation of Rio on their budget. To me, it doesn't take a large budget to "make magic happen"! Twenty years ago this month, DH and I paid for our own wedding. We didn't have a lot of money, since we bought a house, too.  We had many family and friends help out with anything from letting me borrow the dress, taking the photos, giving us the groom's cake and my mom made finger sandwiches for our afternoon reception.  My favorite part is my mom finding a 50% off wedding cake coupon just in time for the wedding! It was a sweet day with our families and friends!:

America's Virginia Thrasher Wins Team USA's First Gold

The first day of the Games got off to a good start for Team USA: America's Virginia Thrasher won the first gold at Rio in the women's 10-meter air rifle.

Thrasher, 19, beat Du Li of China in the final round with a total score of 208. Yi Siling, also of China, received the bronze.

A freshman at West Virginia University, Thrasher is a native of Springfield, Virginia. She's ranked number 23 in the world.

This marks the first time the U.S. got the first gold of the Games since Sydney in 2000.

I watched the opening ceremonies and will be watching certain events -- gymnastics, swimming, diving, the equestrian events and maybe a few of the others....of course will be watching some of my NBA Spurs play for their respective countries---Patty Mills-Australiia, Manu Ginobili-Argentina, Tony Parker-France, and newest Spur, Pau Gasol-Spain.....

One thing I thought was a bit ironic was being lectured on global warming by Brazil when they have a huge pollution problem ---  raw sewage and dead animals in their waterways---ARRRGGHHH!!!!

I'll also be watching some NFL preseason football

I enjoyed London's opening/closing ceremonies.

Also I still remember when the U.S. hosted the Olympics in the U.S, I don't remember which year...it outlined the history of our country....of course I'm a bit biased.

I thought the environmental part was totally out of place.  It is about athletics.  I also didn't think it was boring because of money issues, just because there was so little entertainment.  Too many people were out there just running around.  I would have liked more songs, a little more simple entertainment would have suited me.

Those of us who are older might remember all the people playing pianos--wasn't that in LA?  One of my favorite moments!  And it was simply FAR TOO LONG!  Three hours would have been more than enough.

@Sooner @Spurt, I attended the team and individual show-jumping events at Santa Anita in LA in 1984 and saw the US win Gold in both events. It was magic (and sweltering)!

1932, 1984 (of which you speak), and hopefully in 2024 :-)

The Coliseum was built for the 1932 Olympics and used for  both 1932 and 1984.
