I watch the telecast from Canada. They show the events as they happen not cut up for prime time viewing.

The Laurel award will be given every four years during the during the Olympic games to those with achievements in education, culture, development and peace through sport.

@sunshine45, thanks for mentioning that. Yes, that was certainly a wonderful part of the ceremony last night. It is a very moving and great story. Think of all the young lives he has touched over the years!
Thanks for mentioning that that was a new award. I didn't realize that. I fast forwarded through a lot of Matt Lauer so I guess I missed that mention.

Since the time difference with Rio is only an hour difference (I'm assuming they meant Eastern time), most of this should be live.
For people like me, who don't want to watch the entire day, I prefer the Prime Time recap, especially if it's done well. Bob Costas annoys me, I wish he'd retire with Matt.
But that's what fast forward is for.

I watched the opening ceremonies and will be watching certain events -- gymnastics, swimming, diving, the equestrian events and maybe a few of the others....of course will be watching some of my NBA Spurs play for their respective countries---Patty Mills-Australiia, Manu Ginobili-Argentina, Tony Parker-France, and newest Spur, Pau Gasol-Spain.....
One thing I thought was a bit ironic was being lectured on global warming by Brazil when they have a huge pollution problem --- raw sewage and dead animals in their waterways---ARRRGGHHH!!!!
I'll also be watching some NFL preseason football
I thought the environmental part was totally out of place. It is about athletics. I also didn't think it was boring because of money issues, just because there was so little entertainment. Too many people were out there just running around. I would have liked more songs, a little more simple entertainment would have suited me.
Those of us who are older might remember all the people playing pianos--wasn't that in LA? One of my favorite moments! And it was simply FAR TOO LONG! Three hours would have been more than enough.

It was definitely part of the story of Brazil which included the evolution of Brazil and the rainforest.
What is happening to Brazil's rainforest affects the entire world, not just their country.
Sadly most of the destruction of the rainforest has to do with the Brazilian government!
The Brazilian government has watered down environmental laws and is driving through a huge program of infrastructure building, according to Philip Fearnside, a professor at the National Institute for Research in the Amazon.

Thanks for this @Noel7 as I didn't put together the deforestation of the rainforest with the global warming theme but for me I do find it to be more than a bit disingenuous in their presentation as the Brazil government more than had the power to stop what has happened decades ago.
Please know I realize Brazil has been wracked with bad and corrupt government and I pray the new President can somehow grab hold of this mess and start to steer them in a better direction and save what is left of what is a global treasure. ![]()

My mom and I were just talking about that while watching these opening ceremonies. This was good, but China was just so creative and innovative-there probably won't ever be another as good in my opinion!!!!!!Unbelievable!
