My sweet Rex had to be put to sleep today. Rex was DD's dog but had lived with DH and I since 2004. DD is a nurse who works long shifts and didn't feel it was fair to Rex to be alone. She brought him to us in 2004. Our Beagle was delighted and so was Rex. They were like brothers, got along so well even shared the same dish (at times). Lately, I noticed that Rex didn't want to eat - even his beloved "cookies". Today when I took him for a short walk he lay down on the wet pavement (it rained here today) and absolutely would not get up. The man next door saw this and went into his house and brought back part of a pork chop. Rex stood up for that. DD and her fiancee took him to the vet this afternoon only to find out that he was full of cancer. The vet said that if it were his dog he would have him put down immediately. He said that Rex was in a lot of pain and wouldn't last much longer. One of my fears was that one morning I would find him dead. My poor baby. He was such a good boy.
I lost DH in May 2011. Rex adored his grandpa. At last, they are together. As for my Beagle and I - our hearts are broken.
Sorry for the long post. I had to vent.
Godspeed, my sweet boy. I love you.
