Re: RETAILER TO START CHARGING CUSTOMERS FOR RETURNS

Its because too many shoppers take advantage of free returns and it's costing retailers bug money because they cannot resell that stuff.  It goes into the trash and becomes an ecological nightmare.  Some people use free returns as a form of window shopping.  They order three colors or three sizes and retailers are lucky if they keep one of them.  Then there are shoppers who wear something 3 times and 30 days "decide" it's wrong for them.  Of course, retailers created the problem themselves by encouraging returns to draw in customers.  I buy almost all my clothing and footwear online and I rarely return anything.  I know my sizes and what I like and I don't take chances.  So, I'm ok with paying to return things. The retail world has changed so maybe this is the future or maybe not.  Time will tell.

It's probably a good thing because the "thieves" returns cost us all.

Re: RETAILER TO START CHARGING CUSTOMERS FOR RETURNS

I feel that QVC already has charged for returns for quite a while with their charging customers the shipping fee to send and return if I said that right.

I hate returning things so I try to not order something I might return, unless it is defective.

But I would look somewhere else if I see a company charges extra, including return shipping for returns.

H&M has a fairly young clientel from what I remember so they may be trying to reign in returns. I can imagine people ordering things for one occasion and returning etc and that really hurts a retailer.

Re: RETAILER TO START CHARGING CUSTOMERS FOR RETURNS

I agree with @chrystaltree .

It's gone viral on TikTok with the young people on how to get "free" stuff. They were really affecting the indie authors by buying, reading and then returning their books treating Kindle ebooks like a library which it is not. The authors have to refund all of that money each time they did it.

Amazon has Kindle Unlimited for that type of reading which you pay for and authors have a choice to put their books in KU or not. We screamed so much and, with Amazon losing on their end too, they finally just changed that policy and now if you read more than 10% of the book, you've bought it or have to prove a legitimate return reason with Amazon for your money back.

There needs to be something like that for all retailers. I watch my own family buy multiples and then have a return day with ten bags and receipts in their trunks. I get certain things like clothes and home decor need a trial run but, at some point, there needs to be an understanding of a cost for that type of behavior and a consequence for frequent abusers of a retailer's goodwill.

My opinion but I think it's the reason customer service has plummeted. Good faith goes both ways.

Don't like it?  Vote with your feet.  If enough consumers do that, they'll change the policy or suffer the retreat.

Re: RETAILER TO START CHARGING CUSTOMERS FOR RETURNS

It's not surprising, really.  And once one or two start, then more will follow.  I hate paying any extra charges for shopping on-line -- shipping and handling, and now this!

I have always preferred to shop at real stores, but as these stores have dwindled more and more, I have found it necessary to shop on-line more and more to find what I want and need.  So, it is necessary at times to make returns.  Things do not always look the same when you are seeing them on a computer screen or on your phone!  Or the sizing is off -- through no fault of your own!

Also, as others have posted, many people do abuse returns.  They buy multiple sizes and colors, etc., and then mass return --- and they do it a lot!  So, the rest of us have to suffer for it!

Just wait until they figure out how to charge you for the air you breathe.

I have never paid a restocking fee for returning clothing.

Re: RETAILER TO START CHARGING CUSTOMERS FOR RETURNS

If you have ever worked in a retail environment, you already know that there are shoppers who abuse the system all the time. There are shoppers who are so indecisive they buy a ton and then return most of it. There are thieves who fill a box with soap bars to the weight of the vacuum that was in the box and return it. People who buy the expensive bag, dress or whatever to use for one night. No matter what you call it, it costs us money.

Besides that, the customer is NOT always right. That went out the window in our "me me me" society.
