Not sure what you mean by real license?

But I went a few weeks ago to get my license renewed at the DMV and I was the only person there.   When I was waiting on my photo to be ready another person came in.

I went there the time they first opened in the morning.

A "Real License" is what will be required, nationally, in 2020 for identification to access any federal buildings and travelling out of country.  As of now, a current passport can also be used.  Not sure if anything will change.  It looks the same as the "Standard License" - the license we always got - but has a special-colored marking on it.

You can't travel out of the country with just a Real ID compliant driver's license. You still need a passport for that. The Real ID license will serve as valid ID for DOMESTIC airline travel and access to certain federal facilities.

Here is a good description of the Real ID Act and what it means:

Re: REAL LICENSE

[ Edited ]

i received my STAR ID or REAL license last august, when my license was up for renewal. since i had received my previous license by mail, this time i had to go in. i did not need any documentation other than my expiring license. it took me probably half an hour total. 20 minutes sitting and waiting to see a dmv agent and then less than ten minutes or less to get my photo and go through the computer process of acknowledging that all of my information was still the same.

they mailed me my new license in less than a week. i kept my old license along with a card stating that my new license was on its way. it arrived in less than a week. my license is good for seven years.

@Pooky1 .. I live in New Jersey.  We have to personally go to DMV to have our licenses renewed.  A REAL  Hassle!!  They apparently give you a one time opportunity to do it over the mail.   I already had mine.  My DH just renewed his DL.  It expired on 4/30/18.  It used to be that his next expiration date would have been 4/30/22.  But now it expires on his birthday in early May 2022.   My license always expires in July.  If they use my birthday the next time I renew it the expiration date will be in mid-April!  That means I loose 2 1/2 months.  Don't know who came up with this idea!!

PA.  Our state has refused to address the Real ID License issue for years and now that their backs are against the wall they finally said "Oh yeah, we better start working on this."  Right now they are telling us that the Read ID License will be optional and issuance will be up to the individual.

I was able to renew via mail 3x but there must be a limit or I aged out,

but the process was easy AFA the documents, they just don't have enough people to do the job, and then there are the idiots who don't have all the right stuff

ugh but what are you going to do?

@jackthebear - I was able to renew last time through the mail - I should be getting the stuff very soon for the next renewal, so it will be interesting to see if I can do it by mail or will I have to gather up the documents and do it in person.

My daughter was only able to do it once through the mail, the next one required the dreaded trip.

NJ?

maybe they pick randomly

@jackthebear @CelticCrafter   .. In NJ they give you a ONE time opportunity to do it through the mail.  Unfortunately I already had mine.  Last time I renewed I had to physically go to DMV.

So glad I moved to AZ as DOT has never taken more than 45 mins and it is usually 15 mins.  They also give you your permanent plates and license on the spot.  Before I lived in .CA where the wait was many hours long and some customers were actually sent to our rural location from the nearest large city (1.5 hrs away!!!!).
