What a wonderful Golden Retriever who helped at Ground Zero. Now over the Rainbow Bridge. From the above article:
"The last known living 9/11 search dog has died in a Houston suburb at age 16.
A statement from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service says Bretagne, a Golden Retriever, was euthanized Monday at a veterinary clinic in the Houston suburb of Cypress.

I remember when Bretagne (pronounced Brittany) and her owner/handler,Denise Corliss, came to NYC last year to celebrate her Sweet 16.
The staff at the hotel that they were staying at had a party for her at the hotel (complete with cake and tons of presents), they went to a dog park, the 9/11 Museum and were on all of the major news channels.
Precious Bretagne...you were a brave and beloved girl who had a long and amazing life and I know that right now you're running like a puppy with all of your new friends thru the sunlit meadows of that most blessed place on the other side of The Bridge.

@beastielove Yes, the link I posted in my first post had a sidenote link to that birthday event.. From the videos I saw of it (it was in the news then) the dog had a blast! Here's the link:

My belief is that she is with all the other service dogs, first responders and the citizens that lost their lives that day, and are basking in sunshine and happiness, meeting and greeting each other, and waiting in peace for all those that they had to leave behind.

Bretagne, you stole my heart. Your service was so commendable. I am one who believes that animals have souls that live on in spirit, and one day I hope to greet your beautiful spirit with a song of gratitude and love. Rest peacefully in your new home.

That is one dog who served his country well. It always hurts when you have to put down an animal, but I knew I was doing the right thing when I did. RIP, Bretagne. ![]()

It's hard to beat a Golden for love and loyalty. I'm glad to hear she went on to have a long and happy life.
