Unemployment is hovering around 4%. Everyone is short staffed. Where are you going to find people to replace them?
I can tell by many of these comments some of you have been out of the workforce for some time. Go above and beyond and get rewarded? Ha! How about go above and beyond and you'll be given someone else's job too. Companies downsized during the last recession and worked their remaining staff harder for no more, and sometimes less, money and fewer resources. When workers voluntarily left the workforce during the pandemic, that only got worse.
@RollTide2008 Somebody I was talking to about this told me the same thing - companies found out they could get by with less people, and therefore less payroll. So that even if they could afford to bring more people back on, they aren't.
Our family business is almost down the tubes. My DH and I are both looking for jobs. It is not so easy. Neither of us has had any offers yet.

@Meowingkitty wrote:It's nothing new. It just has a name now. In my last job I basically did quiet quitting. I hated the company, not fond of most of the people and the work was mind numbing. The company did not give raises ever. (Oh maybe a few bucks every five years or so but basically nothing much). I stayed because I had enough time in to get a nice severance package and I was only hanging on because of it. I was with the company 8 years and saw nothing but a company being run into the ground. Sure I could have probably quit years earlier but I was getting to old for most places to want to hire me even though I was only in my 50's.Transfer to another position wouldn't happen either because most jobs were out of state. When review time came around everyone got the same review but with a different grade. If you were one of the last ones hired in the department the best you would ever get would be a 4 with 5 being the lowest. No matter if you reinvented the wheel you would get a bad review. I knew it was just a matter of time before layoffs were coming so I basically did the bare minimum since I knew there was nothing in it for me and the company didn't care. And frankly neither did any of the employees at this point. I was right. After about two years into my current position they transferred the job to another city. I got what I wanted, my severance pay. I decided I had had enough of corporate America and retired. I understand why quiet quitting is a thing.
See? Exactly....SMH
I coudl never live with myself doing that....
Glad to see you got a severance pay that your work ethic didn't deserve.
@RespectLife Well that was a cruel response. Everyone is different. The OP stuck it out, so indeed she deserved her severance pay.

It isn't all smooth sailing in the world, never has been. In this day and age and place we have been lulled into thinking it will be. We need to educate and equip our kids for life instead of telling them what they "deserve" or are entitled to.
No. Not everyone gets a trophy and lots of us have to work very hard to make for what is not fair, what we lack in skills, education, looks, dress, or personality if we want a job that pays "a living wage." Lots of jobs only pay supplemental living wages. What do you have to do to get a better one?
I don't make the rules, I don't decide what is fair or right. I am just saying we aren't helping kids and even some younger adult workers wake up and think what do I want and how do I get it? What do I have to do or change?

My market was packed yesterday and only two full service lanes were open. I asked the cashier if they could not find workers and she replied that the current workers can not get enough hours:/

Yes that's what retail does, they cut hours for current employees in order to maximize profit. And if they hire new people they cut even more, unless it's at holiday peak times. After holidays they cut again. I have worked a couple of retail jobs in the last four years, so I know that stores do this.
They would much rather make customers wait than give employees more hours and pay those employees a decent wage.

Sensible people have passed this "trend" by, if nothing else out of sheer self-respect, and reluctance to have other people have to pay their way, or make up whatever deficit they are causing.
You have to hope that health care providers, transportation workers, those who handle money, etc.-- jobs that can affect the very lives and futures of others- resist the temptation to "quietly disengage", check out, or do the bare minimum.
One tiny example-- failing to carefully scrutinize a patient's X ray results, or medical chart, because one is "not engaged" can be fatal.
These excuses for not being productive, or pursuing excellence, are ludicrous.

@3JJJ@RollTide2008
In reference to your points. I worked for the city school department administration for 32 years, retiring in 2020.
For at least, the last 20 years of working, I saw that when someone retired or left for another job, no one was hired to replace them. Their duties were given to other employees, increasing the work load. At the same time our own positions were being changed with additional duties with each change in our computer systems, which occurred every few years.
So much new technology being sold to the higher ups, who sometimes did not know what our daily duties entailed, many times doubled our work load.
We were not compensated for all the additional work. We got a 3% raise about every five years. Being unionized, good benefits and great health insurance and pensions kept us working for the city.
We also had our share of slackers. My office co-worker was one. Initially, I was picking up the slack for her until I caught on to what she was doing.

@JoyFilled Warrior More and more stores are going to self checkout. I just will not shop there. Our very busy Stop & Shop
typically has only one register open and about 6 self checkouts.
They just do not want to pay for employees.
As my daughter says " I don't work for you", when asked to go to the self scan.
This store also has very high prices, which I'm sure are high to cover the loss from all the shoplifting. Self checkout sets the store up for shoplifting.
