@proudlyfromNJ wrote:Oh, ok @Moonchilde. I only pay the 104.00 because I have the Advantage plan which doesn't cost anything. I thought you were saying you had the Advantage. Thanks for clarifying.
I so wish I could have it too - so much simpler! If I stayed where I am, I would have choices up the wazoo for Advantage plans. But in the zip code where I'll be living, Medicare Advantage is not offered by anyone, so - no choice :-(
I hate the nickel and dime aspect of supplements vs. Advantage. Everything separate :-(
Each state has different laws, not all companies operate in every state, and not all supplement plans are sold by companies in every state. For example - United doesn't sell the plan I bought in my area. It gets crazy, which is why so many are recommending people speak to specialist insurance agents in their state, or who sell in their state. It's no so aaarrgggh! stressful ;-)

FYI: Medicare Part B will cost a new member 121.80 if their income is below 85k. That 104.00 a month is not the correct amount for anyone picking up Part B in 2016.

@proudlyfromNJ wrote:@Moonchilde I am also paying only 104.00 out of my SS check. Are you saying another company gave you less than that? I thought that was about the cheapest.
@proudlyfromNJ -the $104 is what everyone pays for Part B of Medicare and is taken out of your SS check. But, in addition you will need a supplemental plan and that varies a lot depending on what you want and where you live.

I was going through this last year and this message board gave me a lot of help. Some of it was not quite correct but I'm still glad I came on here with questions. The best help I received though was to call the dept of aging as someone has already mentioned. They will put you in touch with an insurance navigator that will explain everything in person.
Regarding AARP and United Healthcare....I was going be charged around $600 a month. So, as has been said, it must be different depending on where you live.

That is incorrect. Many pay more for Part B. Me, for example. New enrollees, for example.
There is incorrect info throughout this thread, so proceed with caution, OP. Consult with experts whose job it is to give you correct information.

Looks like I have a lot of work to do ! Thanks to all for the information. Someone mentioned a retirement counselor on my job. I will check but I think there is a charge for the service. I welcome any other guidance and will post my progress later, thanks again

Duh @Winkk yes, I know about the 104.00. I think I was trying to say I didn't have to pay anymore because of the Advantage Plan. Just got confused for a minute ! Hah.

@Goodie2shoes wrote:I know there has been conversation before but a little guidance would be much appreciated. I have decided to retire in a few months, I've been recovering from a second foot surgery in just a little over a month and have decided I have had enough. So where do I start ? I have received my medicare card for part A only when I turned 65 last year since I was still working. I know I will need B for doctors visits and part D for scripts. Any recommendations on Insurance ? AARP ? Should I contact a Tax advisor for direction on taxes from my pension ? Any info would be appreciated, I am feeling quite lost at the moment

I have AARP and am happy with it. Before choosing, make a list of what you need... Is your primary dr in their network is the most important. If you are on meds, not all companies list them on the same Tier. At your age you probably don't need supplemental yet is you have no serious, chronic ailments...it's very expensive and why pay for something you don't need yet.
The medicare insurance companies want your business, it's very competitive. I contact 3, they all sent reps to my home to discuss... I was surprised at the differences. With SSI, I went in person. These are big decisions and I think it's better to ask questions in person... And you will probably see that you have more questions than you previously thought.
