Questioning Public Area Fragrance

The Today Show just did a story on fragrances in hotels, and I remember one of those home electronic fragrance dispenser even had a scent that was a hotel scent. I guess I never paid attention to the fragrance in a hotel though I have been in hundreds of them. But I remember the cologne spraying folks throughout the higher end stores during holiday times and the fragrance cards that used to be in magazines. I don't know if the fragrance cards still exist or not but I developed a sensitivity to some fragrances and cancelled all my fashion type subscriptions because of it.

Have you noted the smell of a hotel when you entered it? What do you think about it? As I've aged and developed the problem I understand what some went thru and feel somewhat guilty for being insensitive.

Re: Questioning Public Area Fragrance

I honestly don't remember a "hotel smell".  I do get an impression when I first enter a hotel & then my room on how clean it appears to be.  I am obsessed with that.

I have been on several cruises the last few years and none had any particular smell.  The staterooms on Viking & Princess were very clean with no odor.

I do remember going through department stores (I can't remember the last time I went into one) during the holidays and going past or through cosmetics getting sprayed with scent but they always asked first.

I did enjoy the scented cards one got in magazines but I no longer subscribe or even buy a single copy of a magazine anymore.

Re: Questioning Public Area Fragrance

I'm very sensitive to scents no matter where they come from.  Hotel rooms, magazine inserts, car deodorizers, perfume, etc.  A lady wearing perfume sat next to me in church the other week, after a couple of minutes I had to move.

The oils in them give me a headache.

Re: Questioning Public Area Fragrance

Several decades ago, when we moved to NYC, my husband refused to walk through Bloomingdales for any reason because of the inescapable fog of fragrance on the main floor emanating from the cosmetic counters.  I also let my magazine subscriptions go because of those truly offensive scented cards. I can't say I have noticed hotel scents but then don't frequent hotels much.  I would imagine that is only in the public areas, not the guest rooms?

@We rescue cats I do know this!

My daughter & I went to Vegas in April to attend some concerts. We stayed at the Luxor & when we walked in I noticed the fragrance, but didn't think about it being the hotel itself.

But every time we walked in I noticed it & it reminded me of my favorite perfume that has been discontinued.

Then as we walked around I noticed that other hotels had "smells", so I looked it up.

That was the first time that I knew about hotel scents.

@Winkk

A few weeks ago I happened to go to an earlier Mass.  unfortunately, the entire time I had to keep a few tissues wadded up and held to my nose:  Insense.....

Then the pastor announced that this Mass would be with incense in the future.  The other Masses would not.  OK...

He evidently doesn't realize that the incense leaves a lingering scent in the air....

I don't want to smell others body odor whether from perfume or lack of cleanliness. To expect others to smell your choice of scent is inconsiderate.

I never noticed smells in hotels either, but I did notice that one of those Home Scenting machines had a scent called Hotel..It is supposed to be a "Clean Scent"..I have never smelled it so I don't know.

I would think in a hotel its just in the lobby, not in the guest rooms, as too many people have sensitivities to scents....

I used to subscribe to magazines and the first thing I did was fan through it and throw away the inserts that were scented.  I would get a major headache if I didn't.

Re: Questioning Public Area Fragrance

I am very aware of aromatherapy used in nicer hotels. I saw diffusers tucked in little corners & a very soft subtle scent in the air. I loved the scent so much in the Langham Hotel, London that I purchased diffusers at their gift shop for me & a few friends.

I’ve always loved perfume but was a nurse so I was very careful about wearing overbearing scents. My patients often commented that I smelled so nice & at that time I just used fragrances that smelled clean. I still love fragrance & wear my favorite scents which have remained the same for many years.

I also have an electronic diffuser which is timed for certain times of the day. When people come to our home, they often comment that our place smells so nice.
