Saving $$$ is their big pitch; however, if the person does some due diligence, they'll discover the real long term costs.

Yeah, commissions and "monthly service" fees, among other hidden costs....

Re: Question when opening a bank account

This is strange to me. I have cash in three banks and never got contacted to sell me anything by phone or in person. No questions either.

Re: Question when opening a bank account

Every once in a while the teller at the bank will say to one of us that they can have someone contact us regarding making investments because they think we have too much money in the money market account.

No thanks, we already have a financial advisor that we trust implicity.  When the total reaches a certain amount we move it elsewhere.

I had a banker tell me the same thing. She wanted me to move the money to one of their savings accounts.

I told her when the bank starts paying a higher interest than online banks, I'll be happy to switch. She didn't have an answer for that.

Re: Question when opening a bank account

I hate all the questions when I deposit a lot of cash from our family business. I know they are looking for drug dealers and money laundering, but it still irks me. When business was good, we might have over 10k to deposit from a 7 day event. With that much money, they ask all kinds of personal questions, like who I work for, my position, etc. I started to hold the cash back or split the deposit to two different banks. Just this week I deposited $3600 and kind of got the side eye from the teller.

One time I was in the bank, and the TELLER told me I had TOO MUCH

money in my checking account.    I had to explain that I just wrote a check for $15,000 to pay for a new roof, and the check didn't have time to clear the bank yet.

These people should mind their own business, not MINE.    di

I had a teller tell me basically the same thing.  She suggested I put the money in a Money Market acct where I would earn the highest interest.  I thought she was doing me a favor but explained why I did not want it there.   I would have made a bit more interest!

I have to go through that periodically.  One bank actually calls me about getting more interest in something other than my money market account.  And I have to explain over and over, usually to the same person, why I want to keep that amount where it is.

Re: Question when opening a bank account

That's a ridiculous question for opening a checking account.  I definitely would not have answered it.  I probably would have decided on the spot that this bank was too intrusive and not right for me and left.

Re: Question when opening a bank account

Speaking of banks------mine contacted me yesterday (Sat) to see if I was using my debit card----wait for it----at Harrahs Casino in NJ!!! NO---I live near Seattle---also a hefty purchase from a BestBuy in MN!!! Got my debit card blocked but still those purchases are pending. So off to the bank on Monday to start a transaction dispute and get a new card---Immediately I changed my passwords and froze my credit on the 3 credit reporting places----this has happended a few times before and fortunately, my bank has always notifies me. I usually do check my accounts at least once a day---so would have seen it. Now for the task of changing everything over to a new account number!!!  Geez!!! DIRTBAGS!!!!!!
