I went to youtube and looked for "Dodge exhaust straight pipe" and got a hit! But that's not what this truck sounds like. It's not a noisy exhaust, like a motorbike. It's just a really loud engine. It sounds exactly like the garbage truck.

Our neighbors have a older Dodge truck, and it's incredibly noisy. It's as loud as the garbage truck (DH agrees with me on that). I was out walking the dog this morning, and several other trucks passed us almost silently. Mazda, Toyota, Chevy, two Fords: all as quiet as regular sedans.
Why is our neighbor's truck so loud? I presume it's diesel, but that wouldn't make it so loud, would it? It's not about backfiring or needing a new exhaust or muffler; the whole engine sounds like it was made by Boeing. And the owner spends every spare minute working on his vehicles, so I don't think he'd be driving a truck with parts that needed replacing.
This isn't a big issue or anything. I'm just curious about why his truck is fifty times louder than anyone else's, and I don't think he'd appreciate me asking him. He loves that truck.
There are many things that can make an engine, be it in a truck or car very loud. A diesel engine of old is notably more noisy than a conventional internal combustion engine. Then there is always the issue with a problematic engine, of any kind, making some pretty loud noises.
Throw in a possibility of exhaust modifications to make them louder and/or to aid in more engine proficiency? And any motor vehicle can be very loud. Heck, I got hauled arrested and hauled to court when coming home fro work at 1 o'clock in the morning when I was 17 years old.
Police officer pulled me over to find out what I was doing out that late and then decided to check the noise level of my "glass pack muffler exhaust system". He said it didn't pass code and wanted me to sign a ticked. I said "no way" since I had passed the "annual exam necessary to get a license on my vehicle for my city/county and state". Spent 3 hours in jail and had to get up at 7:30 am to go to school.
Went to court and the judge told me I had to remove the exhaust system and bring it to the police station in 5 days. If I didn't he was going to put out a warrant for my arrest. Nice for a 17 year old working 4 nights a week until 12:30am and going to high school, eh? Nowadays the parents would probably sue the city/county and state if their "baby" got pulled over for no reason other than driving home from work.

Description sounds like it is supercharged.

Another wondering if it's the muffler or tailpipe. I'm rural, our mail carriers here all use their own cars. Our houses sit back pretty far from the street and it takes a lot to hear loud radios and noises like when I was in the burbs.
Our carrier had a busted muffler for at least 2 years and I could hear her coming 4 houses away. Loud but always knew when the mail was here!

He drove past me yesterday and I'm sure the noise is all coming from the engine, at the front, not the back of the truck. I have driven old cars and needed to replace mufflers on them, that's not what this sounds like.

That's funny you should start a thread about loud trucks. I just bought a new Suburban and it's loud when I start it. I'm usually the one driving it when we go out, but last night my son started it up while I was standing outside of it. WOW. It wasn't loud when he pulled away. Just the start was VROOOM.
I do worry about the neighbors!

Once I lost one of the U-bolts that held the exhaust pipe from the front all the way to the back. The break was right underneath the middle of the car. It rumbled loud every time I hit the gas, but was even loud when I was idling. It was a Firebird, so I loved it, till my Dad fixed it.....
