Question for those in a book club

In an effort to encourage my 9 year old granddaughter to read more, we are having our own book club. My daughter, granddaughter and I will be starting this week, just the three of us. We are going to read The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

I have never belonged to a book club so I am not exactly sure how it works. Do we agree on reading so many chapters and then discuss it? Any help you may have or suggestions to share would be much appreciated. Thanks
