Question for Those Who Do Sit Ups, Crunchies, or Similar Exercise

OK...I'm working on my muffin top. I tend to carry weight right below my bustline...not in the low stomach. I was planning to do crunchies or modified sit ups, then I read an article where the doctor said not to do these exercises as it makes you build muscle in this area...and then you don't look any slimmer. {#emotions_dlg.blink} He recommended that you just walk.

I'm confused! What has your experience been? Thanks for any input!
