I was on Google earth looking at street views.  I noticed the covered walkways in front of some buildings.  Are they a protective covering for people as they pass by the skyscrapers in case of falling objects? Or are they just shade coverings for businesses?  Just curious.  I visited there once long ago and never thought about it.

Re: Question for New Yorkers

The covered walkways are usually on buildings where some sort of construction is going on

Funny, it's something that I never thought about since it's apparent in person that the covered walkway is under a construction area.  It's supposed to be temporary though sometimes it seems like it's there for a very long time.

@Coastalcarolina  NYC requires all buildings that are 3 stories or taller be checked every ten years for loose bricks/masonry; hence, repairs with scaffolding, etc. are ongoing somewhere in the City continuously.

Re: Question for New Yorkers

The scaffolding?

In many places it remains up for years.

The City is attempting to change that and fine building owners who don't remove it once the work is completed.

@Coastalcarolina.  Are you referring to an awning  or a wooden syructure?

Re: Question for New Yorkers

@Coastalcarolina   We just returned from a trip to NYC and it seemed like every other block had scaffolding.  Have to find the company that supplies the scaffolding and invest in it!!!

I agree with previous posters about buildings having to do an inspection every few years and also with the poster who pointed out that at some buildings the scaffolding has been up for a VERY long time!!

Re: Question for New Yorkers

@Kachina624 ,  actually both.  Some have just canvas awnings, others were the metal scaffolding as others mentioned.  It is unsightly, but obviously a necessary thing!

Re: Question for New Yorkers

I'd guess the canvas awnings would serve to protect visitors from the elements.  They'd be no help with falling debris.
