Re: Question about tipping when store employees help you get things to the car

I am curious......how do you manage without a car ?

Flame away, but if the employee is on the clock and being paid accordingly, I don't see why they would need to be tipped in this situation.

I get my groceries put in the back of the car because I have a sciatic nerve issue.  There is no tipping at our grocery store.

Whenever this question has come up, it always results in those who tip and those who think it's part of the person's job.  What I have taken away from these threads is that there appears to be a regional aspect to this--local custom, whatever it may be called.

In the end, it's a personal choice and everyone should do what they feel is right. What I do in NYC is probably very different than what I might do if I lived elsewhere and had different experiences while growing up

 No, I don't . All this attitude  with people now a days  demanding / expecting a tip for just

 doing the job they are already receiving a salary for is so pathetic.

You can check with the store , but honestly  if there is an employee who is extra nice and you  want to do something  give them a cup cake .

I load all my own items or my husband does , except on a occasion  when I am  alone buying  bags of garden mulch or  raised bed  garden soil  that are wet from rain which makes them much heavier.  I have had numerous people that I did not know  help me  llift garden supplies in my vehicle . There are many gentlemen  in this world  !

I think it's just part of their job. If I had a lot of heavy bags AND someone went out of their way to help me I would probably offer a small tip.  Smiley Happy

Re: Question about tipping when store employees help you get things to the car

A few months ago i was getting gas at a station where the attendant pumps for customers.  My change was $3 and the young attendant asked if I wanted change.  I did and got a strange look along with my change.  I was sort of surprised.  BTW at Christmas time we always give the attendant (not this one) a $20 bill.  This young man is so nice, friendly and respectful.

At Darden restaurants like Olive Garden and the newly acquired Ruth's Chris, the designated curbside carrier receives a higher hourly wage than indoor table servers.

Putting your order in a bag, checking that it's complete and carrying it to your car takes maybe five minutes. So different than waiting on you for a leisurely hour-long dinner.

@AuntMame

I only had to have help a couple times, so I'm not up on all that is expected these days.  However, when I did get help I did tip.  I think it's good to offer a couple $$ for the help.

I have lived most of my life in large cities so need for a car.  We walk everywhere and have a "dolly" to carry heavy items.  We also have the option of having items delivered.
