Question about Blue Jasmine...

I heard this weekend that people think the Cate Blanchette character was based on Mia Farrow and what happened to her after she and Woody broke up.

If you saw the movie, did you get that connection?

I'm on the fence about watching it...

TIA.

I didn't see the connection. I loved the movie. The acting was superb.

The commentator on TV said it was about how a woman acts after she loses her place in society after a scandal.

Does that sound right?

It was about the woman's reaction to the scandal (which was supposedly based on Mia and how she acted after Woody left her).

I can see your point now that you point that out. I just didn't think about that while I was watching the movie. I loved Alec Baldwin and Cate Blanchett in it, and I thought Cate did a wonderful job showing such a neurotic persona. Yes, the similarities could be there.

If that's the case, it could explain why all the accusations of his abusing his daughter are surfacing again with a vengeance right now - and why Cate was particularly called out.

Re: Question about Blue Jasmine...

I saw an interview with Cate Blanchett and she said she based her character on Ruth Madoff. Woody Allen's directing style is not to direct at all apparently.

I'd love for her to win. She is so talented and under rewarded, IMO.

If Meryl Streep wins again, I'll be very upset.

Re: Question about Blue Jasmine...

I don't believe there's a connection. In my opinion, Blue Jasmine is worth watching, but it's not much more than a "Lifetime " channel quality movie. I do not believe Cate Blanchet should have been nominated for best actress! It's VERY over-rated----in my opinion.

Re: Question about Blue Jasmine...

I would liken the similarity more to the Madoffs. I loved this movie. Cate was so good. I liked her sister and the other characters also. Andrew Dice Clay was good too. I hope Cate wins the Oscar for this one. It didn't hurt the movie to have been set in SF either, lol, beautiful scenery.

Re: Question about Blue Jasmine...

I haven't watched a Woody Allen movie in over 20 years and I wouldn't trust his interpretation of anything so it's irrelevant whether he thought it's based on Mia.

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.

Re: Question about Blue Jasmine...

The overall plot is similar to the Madoff story. I think what is being referred to here, tho is the aspect of her going ballistic when her husband takes up with a teenage au pair - and says he really loves her. Then she calls the FBI to turn him in and basically descends into madness.
