@Trinity11 OMG! That is awful. That would take my breath away. Hopefully, that won't happen again.
I try to keep on top of things here. My DH hasn't a clue on anything that relates to money. We are so fortunate that there is no tax on retirement income, either state or local where we live. That is helpful.

There goes my trip to Bermuda! Just sent the Federal return yesterday. My husband just retired last November so he fired the accountant and handles everything himself. I am not sure that is a good thing. LOL

@Carmie Thanks for the clarification.I misunderstood & thought that 85% of it went back to Uncle Sam automatically.
I expected it to be added into our other income & subject to regular taxes.

@Somertime wrote:@NicksmomESQ It was @deepwaterdotter husband, not mine, who had the credit freeze and was able to apply online.
@deepwaterdotter Did your husband set up his SS account before you did the credit freeze? Nicksmom was asking.
Yes, he did.

thank you for the information Carmie!
I'm d-o-n-e working full time, but having been temping in school jobs this past year. I have to watch what I make until I reach 65, as I'm collecting a NYS pension. I cannot make more than $30M, which isn't going to happen anyway! Once I turn 65, no more cap.
Now I'm reading up on Medicare. Again, the good thing is that I'm a NYS retiree, so I'm not paying an arm & a leg for medical and I understand that will go down.
Happy birthday to you too! I'm October.

I went in to our local social security office and it was very easy and fast. Yes, at least 5-6 months in advance of his 70th.

1. Please DO NOT apply for your retirement more than 4 mths before the date you want your benefits to start....the system will not accept it and your application will be denied and you will have to reapply.
2. There is no need to unfreeze any credit reports before applying for SS....your credit report has nothing to do with applying for your benefits.
3. SS will only call to discuss other benefit options (i.e. spousal benefits) or if there is a need to make corrections or to clarify something you put down (i.e. when you turn your full retirement age, you can start your benefits that mth but if you put the mth after (which a lot of people do) then you will get a call to make you aware of that and the same goes for age 70, there is no additional benefit of waiting a mth later or any longer - you're just missing out on on checks).
Yes, I play a Social Security Claims Specialist in real life.

@topcat10 Since you have professional knowledge in the area of Social Security benefits, mind if I ask you a question?
On the Social Security website under "F&Q Home" it states:
"You cannot create a my Social Security account online if you have a security freeze, fraud alert, or both on your credit report. You must first ask our Identity Services Provider to remove the freeze or alert.
To create a my Social Security account in person without removing the security freeze or fraud alert, visit your Social Security office."
In order to start SS benefits, can a person file online (create a my Social Security online account) without first removing a credit freeze or fraud alert? TIA for your time to respond, DEEP

Will Social Security increase/decrease your payments to Medicare according to your income fluctuations?
