Re: QUESTION ABOUT TORNADO COUNTRY ....

If I remember correctly there was a tornado last year in western Wisconsin that krept up undetected and leveled most of a small town. I hesitate to jinx ourselves but we have enough hills that have so far been able to protect most of this area from a lot of tornado damage. A tornado will bounce off of hills and change course. My biggest fear would be getting to the point of having to pull the car over and lay in a ditch. That seems so against natural instinct.

One year a twister came through our town out in northern California and ripped the porch and posts right off of the apartment complex I was in. Twisters don't usually have the opportunity to gain much force out there though because of the mountains.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT TORNADO COUNTRY ....

Goodness, no, most people font have them. The water table is too high in many places, and storm cellars are too expensive for many people. They now have ones that can hold from 4-12 people (depending on the size), and they go under your garage, with a sliding metal door on top. Extremely safe, less expensive ($2200-3000), and can be put in in a half day. They have waiting lists for them in many areas.

We've had warnings and watches for the last few days and it's so unnerving ! We're in a warning now.

I'm more afraid of tornadoes than hurricanes !

Re: QUESTION ABOUT TORNADO COUNTRY ....

Believe me when I say I am scared when we get tornado warnings here.......And when you see the thunder and lightening, the trees blowing, and getting as dark as night out there, it is pretty scary. Then the front door to the building is blown open and then slams shut.....and keeps doing that. There is no way we tenants can lock the door.

I'm glad you have close neighbors and access to a basement, ShowMe.

With hurricanes there's so much advanced warning. The problem was there were so many warnings that people would tune them out.

Yes, very fortunate, and now I have to gather up Mr. Lucky and take him with me. With all the thunder and lightening we get here, you would think he would be scared of the thunder.....but heck no, he sleeps right through it. Doesn't phase him one bit.

About a basement flooding with a tornado......doubt that would less likely happen here because it would take one heck of a lot of water to come in....... Feel safer down in the basement than I do in my apartment at times like that.

No everyone does not have a storm cellar or basement! We do not have a basement, you get in any room that "does not have windows", hallway or closet or bathroom! You just pray that God will protect you and be prepared to protect yourself!

Living at Ft Bragg a few times and other southern posts, precautions were always taken, evacuations, procedures to follow and hunkering down. I got used to the drill. When we were in KY, TN and OK, well, different situation all together. The sirens were scary but at least some notice,

Where we are now there are no sirens so reliance on weather radio and tv is all we've got. Watching the crawl is essential.
