QUESTION ABOUT THE DARK WEB - Page 3

The 'web' I'm in, is so dark (paint it black) it hasn't seen the light in months. Everything is locked down so tight it's hard for me to access things. All thanks to my bank's major hack, not from any personal careless activity.

I bet there aren't many people who haven't been affected. You just have to stay on guard. It gets exhausting.

I was told by someone who is tech savvy with the largest phone company, not to pick up on a spam caller because once you pick up they know this is a legitimate number and they know what time they reached you and they can continue calling.

One of my card issuers informed me of an email on The Dark Dark Dark Web. You all have these things out there, even if you think you don't and it's not possible. Oh, it's possible and highly likely.

Just monitor your most sensitive accounts and information as you normally would do.

You're absolutely right about there being information out there.

As you mentioned, someone can find out if they have information there from one of their bank card holders.

From what I understand, it's usually personal information of some type from people that was obtained in an improper way, and then can be shared there on the Dark Web.

@Tinkrbl44 I was the victim of identity theft many years ago and DH was just notifiied that his information was compromised during the AT&T breach. His credit card was recently used for an unauthorized purchase.

My advice to everyone, not just those who have been impacted, is to check your credit card and bank statements regularly as well as your credit report to check for unauthorized charges and accounts.

I check mine daily ... yes, daily. Not only am I really on top of any activity, it also means I don't have to review a monthly statement! Whew!

Anyone can get your phone number from legitimate sites or the dark web. I'm not that worried about the phone number. I block calls I don't want. My iphone also alerts me to scam calls so I don't even have to answer.

I'm more concerned about my tax ID, bank info, income sources, credit card, etc.

I investigated fraud for 20 years and you'd be amazed if you knew how easy it is to scam someone online. A few things you can do include:

Don't mark your bank and other info to remember you.

Set up secondary security on websites to require a texted code before you can log in.

Use a reputable VPN. They aren't 100% secure but are better than none.

Don't go to unknown websites & watch for scam websites as they can look a lot like real ones.

Don't click on links in emails.

Clear your cookies, cache, and history on a regular basis.

Block and report unknown and scam email/text senders.

Those emails sound like a scam to me.

That means AAA data has been comprised. Perhaps also matched with other data floating on.

Maybe AAA should also look into their own security.

One can set a daily dollar limit to debit card transactions, mine is $200. Period, the end for a day. And I also get instant notifications.

You can set notifications on your bank accounts and credit cards for an instant notication of any transaction over a specified amount, mine is $3.

Yep, I worry. But so much fun to scold your phone right there in the parking lot. Often they beat me to the car 😂
