Purging Papers, Found A Check

I admit to being remiss in organization. I make notes on envelopes while the notebooks I buy remain unused. Every once in awhile I go through the file cabinets and shread old paperwork. Today was that day and I found an uncashed check from 2008. It doesn't have one of those end dates on it. So, I'm wondering if I can deposit it.

I know I can Google or call the bank. I just thought I'd ask, what's the oldest check you've found and/or cashed?

Re: Purging Papers, Found A Check

Is it from a company?   I'd think that if they are still in business and it doesn't have a 'much cash by' date it would be good.

But heck, I don't know.  Smiley Happy

I cannot remember a time when I found a lost check years later, but then I cannot remember much anymore.  Smiley Wink   I've found cash and that was always a good thing.  No expire on that. heh

Re: Purging Papers, Found A Check

When my daughter turned 21 we were going to give her all the savings bonds people had given us for her when she was born. In the envelope I found a check from a friend for her.  I mailed the check back to the friend, 21 years later, with a note, "You can balance your check book now."

I would call the bank and make sure that you can deposit it or cash it.

You wouldn't want to let it slip through only to have someone else deny it and be charged a fee for it being returned.

If it is a check from a business, you are probably on your States unclaimed cash registers.  Business will typically report and send the funds every year or two. You will need collect the funds from them.

You're probably right. It is from a business. I should check my state's unclaimed cash site.

Most business checks are void after 1-2 years.

I just happened to look at my State's unclaimed money and surprise! my name was the list. I forgot what date the check was from but I think it was about 2012. I wrote to the State on January 12, 2018  to claim the money and tout suite I just got the check about a week ago.
