Purchases and Returns on Shopping Channels

I bought two tops from Evine and returned both. The first one I used their return label which was $7.95.  The second one I returned on my own which cost $3.10. I added insurance which cost around $2.00.  I put these on value pay. The first installment for both items was $25.80 including s&h plus tax. I received a refund of $7.77 for returning both items. Therefore, leaving a deficit of $18.03 which I stil need to pay. I have decided not to purchase items on shopping channels unless I am absolutely sure I will not have to return. This was a hard lesson to learn. I had to pay $18.03 just to look and try on these items.

I don't understand how more people aren't understanding that.  I wonder if people added up how much they lost on returning items, they would be shocked.  I don't buy clothes online anymore - love my tj maxx - I can just return it to the store - no out-of-pocket costs for me!

@elated

Your situation is all too famiiar to me. I learned the hard way too. I won't order unless I know for sure it's something I know will fit or use. Clothing seems to be the worst. Evine doesn't refund either way on shipping and by the time you get your "refund" it's pitifull. Sorry you had this experience, but now you know what to avoid in the future.

Re: Purchases and Returns on Shopping Channels

I figure if I go out to shop B&M stores I waste a lot of time and a lot of gas, plus I will end up buying myself something to drink and/or lunch. So I feel the cost to me in time and money to go out shopping do add up.

Re: Purchases and Returns on Shopping Channels

I understand.  Luckily I rarely return anything because I'm very easy to fit (XS).  I did have to return a jewelry item to Evine fairly recently (it was not at all as presented.....very junky).  Their jewelry shipping charges are way too high.....usually $8-9.  Add the return shipping to that, and you see how much it cost me just to see how subpar it was.  I still order from them sometimes, but I guess I'm a lot more cautious.  Their jewelry quality varies a lot.

Re: Purchases and Returns on Shopping Channels

I have recently discovered my go to website for clothes after much trial and error shopping just about everywhere.  So glad that is over. Will not be ordering clothing here or evine as they just are not cut right for my shape (medium).

@truffle  Me too. I have always liked shopping at Blair and still find them to be my best bet for clothes I won't want to return.

Re: Purchases and Returns on Shopping Channels

Shopping channels for people don't know how to determine their size or who like to take chances.  I rarely return anything, I never have and I've been shopping with shopping channels for over 30 years.  I take my measurements with a tap measure about once a month, I never assume that I wear a certain size.  I don't care what sizes the models and host wear.  I don't use them as a size guide and most important of all, I know what styles look good on me and I know what styles don't look good on me and I don't deviate.  I don't let the blah blah blah get to me.  Also, I only buy from 4 or 5 designers here.   I know the cut, the sizing, the styles and the colors.  Yes, I often see things from other designers that catch my eye but I just refuse to take that chance.  "you have 30 days to return it" doesn't influence be because wrapping it up and treking to the post office on a Saturday morning and waiting for my refund is not the way to go for me.  I think I return clothing about 3 times a year and ususally it's because the color isn't what I thought it would be....or I already own something similar to it.  I returned an Evine dress last week because I forgot that I own a similar dress.  When I do return something, the cost of returning is totally irrelevant because it would cost a lot more to keep a dress that I'm never going to wear.

Re: Purchases and Returns on Shopping Channels

I only order clothes from Loft, Anthropologie and sometimes Talbots.  I only order if I have enough to get free shipping or if they are offering free shipping that day.  If I need to return something I take it to the store.  I almost always order during a sale, too.

I'm between an XS and a S and read reviews carefully to see how an item is running.  Occasionally I order both sizes knowing I'll return one to the store.

Re: Purchases and Returns on Shopping Channels

I just posted a question on another thread about the philosophy TSV...mega sizes. I wondered what happens to all the returns on cosmetics and shower gels. I assume QVC throws it aways. Clothes they can re-sell.

The mark up in price to us vs cost to QVC must be huge that they can afford to throw away returns and still make a profit.
