I don't really understand this. I guess it's because I am such a private person and think someone's grief should be a private thing and not a spectacle. While some may be well meaning in their intentions the family should be asked how they feel about such things. A better way would be to have a memorial fundraiser for charity in the person's name later. The rest seems just a waste of money. When there is a tragic event and people who didn't even know the deceased show up (some only for the cameras) - well I would never think to insinuate myself on the family and their tragedy. It may be touching to watch for some but how awful it must be for the family to relive it over and over with these memorials. A local girl was murdered and there were these types of memorials and flowers and stuffed animals etc and the family was criticized because they refused to make an appearance. Instead they asked that money be donated to their daughter's favorite cause and for their privacy and no one heeded their request. The cameras and strangers all came anyway!

I think I must be the only person who thinks this is littering ....... while the flowers for Diana were touching, all I could think was WHO is going to get stuck cleaning this mess of rotting flowers up? {#emotions_dlg.crying}

There needs to be a better way to pay respects .... like maybe at the person's gravesite? {#emotions_dlg.unsure}

I saw a segment on our local news about the memorial where the 2 NYC policeman were murdered recently. People in the area, both residents and business owners, want it gone yesterday. The sidewalks are littered with rotting flowers, soggy, dirty teddy bears and an overflow of people. It makes it difficult for people to enter and exit their apartments as well as block businesses.

There is trash to remove after parades and other gatherings so it seems a bit of mess isn't worth getting irate over. Somehow, I'm reminded of the no shoes in the house people, too lazy to do a bit of cleaning.

Instead of wasting the money on these things, there should be some sort of collection box set up somewhere safe so money could be donated to charitable causes which would mean more than those displays and wasteful spending on flowers, stuffed animals, cost to clean up the mess afterwards, etc. Maybe an area where people could put pledge cards for display and then they could send in their donations later. Sure would make more sense.

No, that is what a funeral or memorial service is for.

The roadside memorials are a way for some to ensure the deceased will not be forgotten. It's also a reminder to those passing by to drive carefully.
