I believe it is never pronounced correctly with the "q" sound.  But is "mar-kee" in French and "markees" (the just sort of peters out) to the Brits.  

 

And as to either/ither, this poor hillbilly could NEVER get away with "I-ther.  It would be totally against my raisin'!  LOL!!!  Wouldn't even attenpt it.  I would be too embarrassed--for me.
