JMO, but I think you need to identify the "payoff" for your procrastination.  What do you get out of it?  What's the benefit? If you didn't benefit in some way, you'd stop.  Mull over that for a while.

OR ... Is it possible that you hold back out of FEAR?  Afraid of making a mistake or making the wrong choice?

Rather than beating yourself up over this, try to get to the root of WHY ...  what's the payoff?

BTW ...  personally, I prefer the term Chronic Overthinker.  LOL  Woman LOL

@Tinkrbl44 , What still amazes me is that after countless examples of how dealing with the problem takes away the stress, I still put it off.

@QVCkitty1,

I can relate to your getting overwhelmed at the little things, changes that have to be dealt with or things that come up. Not the big things.I'm trying to think of these things more calmly not get upset about it, and that I can fix it or work thru it.

I have the opposite thing from procrastination. People are always telling me, and I tell myself-I don't have to do it right now or all at once or all by myself. But I don't usually listen.

But I'm trying and trying not to get upset about any and all the mix ups, appt's, mistakes of businesses etc etc and just saying to myself-I can do this.

And calmly thinking it doesn't have to all be done all today.

And also trying to ask for help better, even when there are many offers, I like to do it myself but can't always.

I think procrastination comes from knowing or believing it will not be a pleasant thing to do, or fix and that is pretty natural I think. It's just how we handle it-too much or putting off for too long. There's probably a nice balance in there somewhere!

Yes, I am a procrasnator.  Not always, but sometimes I am just not excited to do something I know I need to or that I should.

Eventually, I get it done....and on time.  I just wait until almost the last minute.

My husband is the opposite. He is always in a hurry to get things done.

I would say I am a semi-procrastinator.  Things that would have dire consequences or inconveniences if put off, I will make myself take care of it immediately..

But if I can put something off for awhile or think about it later (put it in pending), I will take advantage of that and wait til it is impossble to wait any longer or forget about it and later just say Oh Well.  I call myself a "put my head in the sand" personality.

Sometimes I have found procrastinating has actually had an advantage.  For instance things turned out OK or were resolved without any action on my part or for some reason become unnecessary.

Currently I have 3 items on my desk that I have some time to take care off.  One I am defnitley going to to (sometime soon) and the other 2, I'll think about for awhile.  These are the type of items I have found I have to do when the mood strikes me and I clear all I can, but i have to be in the mood.  Today I did take care of an item that has been here on my desk for a couple weeks (not important but just needing done) and today I felt like doing it.

I am one that doesn't like to be early for anything, just on time.  Although I do have a bad habit of running a little late and having to rush.  So I will come to the procrastinator's meeting about 5 minutes late (my usual).

I used to put ads in the paper for beach rentals.

I loved writing the ad, even paying for the ad

But then I would be flooded with phone calls.

And I froze.

All it took was one call-back, usually first caller and I was making money.

But sometimes, I just let things go for a few days when I knew people wanted an answer NOW.  No one was ever irate about it, but I guess I thought they might be.

It's something I stressed about for a long time.  Then I handed it over to realtors to handle.  I paid a fee, but then I couldn't kick myself for being a procrastinator and the stress of being a procrastinator.

Right now I'm being a procrastinator with making my dentist appointment.  Help me!!!

@Carmie  My SO is the same as your DH. He has to get something done right now. I always tell him "You're so impulsive"! Me? I really have to give something a lot of thought before following through (not really...I just, like you, put some things off until the last minute). I work better under pressure.

I have always been a procrastinator. Even though I was a good student, I would wait until the last minute to study, read a required book, finish a paper, etc. My senior thesis was due at 4:30 p.m. I was running across the quadrangle at 4:20 to slip it under my professor's door. (I made it!)

Later, when I was newly married and DH's family was coming to visit, I would wait until the night before to clean and get things ready, even though I should have started days before. I usually ended up staying up most of the night.

I got better once my children were born. And I rarely procrastinated when I was teaching. I couldn't. Now, I have to get things ready in time at work. And I do. But I still procrastinate at home.

Someone told me years ago I was a perfectionist. I disagreed. But I learned they are connected. For example, cleaning the powder room. Some will concentrate on the toilet, sink, and floor, and that's it. I will do those, but notice the baseboards need dusting. I'd better take care of those before I do anything else. Oh, and the shelves need to be cleaned. Every item on the shelf needs cleaning or refilling. I have to go upstairs to get some things. It's almost time to eat, so I'll do it later. And I end up putting it off a day!  Smiley Wink
