Probate...how to process

I have an acquaintance whose DH died within a short time span of a diagnosis. She is cluleless as to what to do and it made me wonder as well, when a spouse dies, and you are in charge of the estate how does probate get started? Do you have to initially contact a lawyer to get the ball rolling? Thanks!
