I've had both experiences, once the off label ink worked, another time it didn't.  And it was a struggle to get the manufacturer to take it back.

When we buy black and the 3 colors, it's around $300 for the HP cartridges.

@deeva   Same here.  My HP printer will not print unless I use HP ink.  I'm in the Instant Ink plan and I love it.

@Mom2Dogs  I have an HP printer too and I always purchase the combo black and tri color XL which gives an additional 500 pages and yes the price is about what I pay too.

The standard size cartridges run out of ink and only give you about 200 pages.  I use my printer all the time.  Every single bill I pay I print the receipt and save it in a box for 7 years and lots of things I print I need to give to my tax preparer.

Also, I have bought it from Amazon and it was inferior running out of ink way too quickly.  They are not trustworthy.  So instead once or twice  a year I buy it in person at Office Max.

All their ink cartridges are locked up.  I've never gotten a bum cartidge from them.

Yes, I once use off-brand ink for my HP printer and thought I got away with it, till I didn't. It's not worth it, don't do it. Printers are cheap these days and companies make their money on the Disposable products such as ink. When DH retired my printing needs were next to nothing. I continued with that printer until it was too old to... I don't remember what it was too old to do but tech support said it was no longer supported. So I had to buy another one and went with $100 HP Wi-Fi printer. Last time I bought ink for it it was around the price you mentioned

@Mom2Dogs  The past 2 times I needed printer cartridges, I bought a generic brand from Amazon.  The brand names cost me well over $60 for black and color, the generic less than $30 for 2.  They last a long time and the printing is great.

I gave up on inkjet printers twelve or so years ago and got a Samsung laser printer (Their Xpress M2020W.) It cost about $50 at the time and is on the second toner cartridge (a $30+ generic one at that) in the 12 years since I got it. Very reliable. If you don't need color printing, a cheaper laser printer is the way to go.

My inkjet printer before the laser printer used six cartridges and each cartridge was nearly $20 and whenever you'd change one cartridge it would recharge the system and use 10% of the ink in every cartridge to recharge the system. Yeah. It drank ink.

If I get another inkjet, it'll be one of the tank ones. They seem a bit pricier to buy, but much cheaper to use.

Oh boy----don't get me started on printers or their ink!!!! 😵‍💫 I just had to buy a new printer last week. It's a mostly hate relationship I have with them ESPECIALLY the HP brand!!!!!! Have had 2 of them in the last 2 years that just stopped all functions----one had the cartridges and the last one had the ink tanks you fill up----which were very reasonable. This new printer--NOT HP, has cartridges--but I am on an automatic plan the will send me inks when needed--need to check the price still, but in the past I have used generic ink and did quite well.

I owned an Epson printer and ordered an 'off brand' to save some money.

The ink did something to the printer and long story short, I had to buy a new printer, lesson learned!!!

Bought another Epson and will make sure to only buy Epson brand.  I pay $75 for my cartridges.

It’s CrAzY !!

But sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a whole NEW printer with ink included, than buy more ink for the printer you already have !
