It seems to me that the concern is not so much for the education of the children but for the economic impact of parents having to stay home to care for and home school them should they not return. Right now I'm feeling it's insanity for them to be in group settings while the pandemic is raging. I'd be very concerned if I was a parent.
Yes, there is an economic impact for sure. However, online learning is so very dependant on the child's parent or caregiver providing supervision and input. Not everyone can homeschool, either because they can't be there or they just don't have the ability. I home schooled my youngest through his junior and senior year of high school. I wrote the curriculum for every subject except Algebra, There were no online schools available. It was the most difficult thing ever did! Also, there are extra curricular activities that are equally important.
@PA Mom-mom Sure, we all recognize that "normal" school is definitely preferable but at what cost? So far everyone has carefully protected their children, keeping them at home away from friends, sports and activities. So now parents are being encouraged to throw all caution to the wind? Why? What if children start dying of this virus...and their families? How many are we willing to sacrifice? If this happens, I don't know how some people with live with themselves.

Conscientious for sure. Were you satisfied with the answers? I read nothing more into the push for schools to open other than it will take some advance planning so the time to start is now. Having had some conversations with a grade school teacher, I do know the majority of parents want their children in the classroom this fall. Many parents say they cannot adequately school their children, and of course, the majority of the parents are working. We have many shift workers and they find home schooling particularly difficult. I would say if some parents want to opt out in favor of some kind of virtual learning, we need to accommodate those options too.

@ScrapHappy That's fantastic! My son enters 9th grade as well and with 3000 students in his highschool, that isn't going to happen, sadly. They will be starting on time, everyone in class, masks not required by anyone. Social distancing will be "monitored" and yeah, not thrilled. There it is. Hope they have a wonderful year!!

If he spends that longexcellent principal. with every parent that has questions he's not going to be able to get anything else done.
I was a principal for many years and spending time with parents is a big part of the job.that is why I was at school from 530 am to often 8 or 9 pm. He is an excellent principal,

Still mulling it over, @Kachina624. :-)
Does anyone have even a clue as to what it would take to create a semblance of safety? The unending details that have to come into play? No wonder the Los Angeles school district keeps saying they're working on a plan.
With much thanks to a friend who shared this with me:

Schools absolutely should open in the fall. Listen to the Academy of Pediatrics. Kids are much less likely to transmit the virus than adults. The consequences of not opening schools will be much worse than opening them. Wake up America. Other countries are doing it and it is working. If you want to keep your kid or kids home then do that, but don't complain about the parents who choose to send their kids to school to learn. Education is vital to our younger generation.

I see your point @RetRN : While I'd hate to learn that any child died from the virus, I recognize that particular age group has been relatively safe. For years, our schools have had viruses going around and they have had to close for deep cleaning. I hope solutions can be found to make it possible for the children to attend classes.

The mental health of children are also at stake. All of you who post here probably have kids and grandkids that are well taken care of by family members. Not so everywhere. Child abuse cases are at record highs. Single parents who are alone have to figure out what do while working. High schoolers are roaming the streets with nothing to do. It is a very complex issue, and one size does not fit all.

Every child has different needs. Not all parents are equipped to meet the learning needs of their child. This is not a criticism but an observation.
Some parents have demanding jobs & just don't have the time. Others lack the intellectual capacity. There is no one size fits all.
The decision to open a school is very complicated. There are a lot of moving parts. There is the safety of the children & the educators. There is also the safety of the families that these kids go home to.
Another consideration is the environment necessary for each child to thrive. For those schools that do open they need to provide options for those parents who choose to keep their children home.
No judgements should be made. Every parents decision should be respected.

He gets an A+. A lot of people would sluff it off, whether it's their job or not and those who do it, I have a lot of respect for. Especially in this day and age.
