Re: Princess Diana - R.I.P. 18th Anniversary of Her Death

I recall how surreal it all seemed as it unfolded. I was in Rome at the time and as one watched CNN, it didn't even feel real.

I think it was due to all of the circumstances surrounding the accident that made it unreal. I mean, when I heard where the limo had crashed, it seemed like the last place one would have thought to set the death of Diana. I'd been in that tunnel myself so many times over the years. And while it could have certainly happened - any accident - there, it just seemed the last place one would be speeding through. Not just because its a tunnel but because its right there in the heart of the city and it was a very busy night. It seemed so odd that anyone - even someone being chased - wouldn't slow down just out of some normal reflex (or some concern for other motorists).

And it made really no sense why they had to leave the Ritz. I mean, Dodi's father owned the joint. I'm sure they could have put them up for the night. Their original plan was to remain at the Ritz that night.

You could see even as they were leaving the Ritz how wound up they all were and how some weird energy was in the air. It perhaps would have made more sense to have had to get to the Fayed apartment blocks (8 mins.) away had Diana not been planning to leave France, like, the next day.

Even their destination seemed to change. When first reported back then, I remember they said that they were leaving the Ritz to go to Mohammed's Villa Windsor which is the Bois du Boulogne. One could take a similar route back there from the Ritz (a 14 min drive). In fact, that's where Dodi and Diana had been earlier that day. And its the villa palace which Mohammed SOLD (for some reason) just following their deaths. It would have actually made MORE sense that the villa was their target destination than an apartment just a block from the Arc de Triomphe (if one's goal is escape the paparazzi).

But someone seemed so last-minute-desperate to get out of the Ritz. And when you look at the hotel video footage of Diana, it doesn't seem to be she who is in any hurry or anxious to leave the hotel. Even the driver had called it a night as he was officially off duty before he proceeded to hit the bottle...before suddenly being summoned again into duty. And his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit. A monkey could have driven that limo better than a person in such a condition. And yet he never mentions it, no one asks, no one senses the guy is not in a condition to drive? The French may like to drink but they aren't all hopping behind the wheel to drive the most famous person in the world.

Problem is that it was said he was not an alcoholic. So to get so drunk and so quickly is suspicious. Its why some still feel that someone tampered with his blood results.

And it also never made any sense that Diana of all the people in the world would have been so unnerved by being followed - even chased - by paparazzi. It was not her first time in the bull ring, so to speak.

Then you also had the fact that there was no attempt to contact Paris police for some sort of an escort. I'm POSITIVE that they would have been happy to comply with such a request coming from Diana's limo.

It was just so many - too many - weird elements all converging at once. Its not to say it isn't possible it was indeed all just just a freak, twisted accident, the result of lots of bad decisions. But one can understand the conspiracy theories. I mean, if there is ever an incident that could call for a conspiracy theory, that was it.

Re: Princess Diana - R.I.P. 18th Anniversary of Her Death

That week I was at the beach with a bunch of friends.  We were playing in the water with our doggies when a passer-by said something about the accident.

We had not cared a bit that the TV was not working correctly until that moment.  We all piled into cars and went to a bar @ an hour away.  There we sat until closing watching the news.

It was so sad.

CNN repeated reported that Di had a broken arm & bruises.  And that she was conscious.   The accident is such a fluke, the way she was medically treated in that slow moving ambulance, no seat belts were used, the driver's blood test registered him to be near unconsciousness, but the Ritz security footage shows him to be alert, apparently aware of his surroundings.

I will never forget the night she died.

I was in the hospital with kidney failure and we all know that a hospital is the last place to get a good night's sleep, so I was awake, watching tv when the news broke.

I was a big Diana fan and I've read many books about her since her death.

A tragic loss.....

I too was in the hospital. My room was right next to the nurses station and I heard them talking. I was so woozy, coming in and out of the effects of anesthesia, so wasn't sure if it was true or not. The next day I asked about it. Was so sad. I like to follow the Royal family, and in particular she was a favorite of mine.

I was at home and kept the tv on until I heard the outcome.  So very sad . . .

@ritasNo1Fan  The only passenger using a seat belt was the bodyguard and he was the only one of course who survived.  I can't believe some people stil don't fasten their seat belts after this accident with the one surivor.

@Drythe  You were so fortunate to have found a bar that allowed dogs in. (wink wink)..

I think a lot of the problem in their marriage was the age difference.  She was so young when she married him, and then developed that bulimia. She never had a chance to become mature into her own woman before she got married, which is important IMO.

Remember how she had doubts before the marriage and her sister said, "Too late Dutch, your face is already on the tea towels."

Remember how Charles on his honeymoon wore cufflinks Camilla had given him with CC entwined on them for Charles and Camilla?

They may have headed back to Dodi's apartment because he had that ring waiting for her there that he wanted to give her (Value Vision's Laura Ramsey sold a duplicate on that station - I know because I bought it).   Maybe he insisted they head back because he wanted to give her the ring? (and maybe propose?  His father insisted that was supposed to be an engagement ring although I don't think she was serious about Dodi).

There's quite a bit online about her last day.

How could a shopping channel sell a duplicate of a ring Diana never received?

I would not believe a word Mohamed Al-Fayed said about his son and Diana's relationship.

I think there were a lot of pictures of the ring published at the time. The shopping network most definitely sold a replica.

I agree about not believing a word Al-Fayed said about the relationship.

I was with my mom and dad at Heathrow headed back to the Sates when the news broke. You could hear the screams, gasps and crying of 100's of people. Such a shock !

The flight back home was surreal.

Oh, my goodness, you were with all those English people!

I'll never forget watching the Queen speak a few days later.  She was acting like she was choking on every work.  She didn't think the Royals needed to have anything to do with Diana, since she was divorced from Charles and no longer royal.  She ended up "having" to make that speech to the nation but it seemed like every word was forced.  She was very cold I thought. (I usually really like Queen E. )
