Re: Prescriptions - compare prices!

I use CVS/Caremark for my Medicare Part D. My premium is one of the very lowest out there. I take six medications monthly. Four of them are $3-4 or less. I get antibiotics for a couple of dollars. I'm satisfied at this point.

Re: Prescriptions - compare prices!

Many of us have prescription drugs coverage through our employers and we only pay the co-pay.  Not to say that co-pays can't be pricey.  It sounds like you spend a lot of time comparing drug prices and that's good for you; many of don't have the time to do that.  Not many people are going to come home after working all day and an hour's commute and then start calling pharmacies.  On top of that some have coverage like mine, I can only get my prescriptions through CVS.  Although last winter when I was on penicillin, I didn't use my benefits, I paid cash for it.  Why?  Because the co-pay was $20 and the prescription itself was $3.99.

Some of the insurance companies make it hard for people to do this, unfortunately. My prescription insurance comes from Caremark/CVS. That means my insurance only pays if I get my meds from Caremark by mail order or CVS in person. Not a big deal of my meds are generic, but for the expensive ones, I'm looking at hundreds of dollars without insurance, so saving $20 but covering the entire amount out of pocket instead of the co-pay will cost me far more than the $20 I would save

Before that I was with another company that would only pay if I went to certain pharmacies and others were not covered, so I faced the same thing. The drug may be $20 cheaper, but I would have to pay the entire amount vs the much smaller co-pay. I was, at least, able to call the various pharmacies they DID work with and find the cheaper one out of the bunch, so that was something. With the Caremark/CVS insurance,  my only options are full-price or co-pay and the co-pay is always less or the generic cost difference is so small it doesn't justify driving the extra 2 miles out of my way for the 33 cents I'd save.

And knowing that the same drug I buy here is a third of the price in Canada makes me really mad. Drug companies are the worst.

I get two drugs from Canada.  One is just under $550.00 a quarter here and $99.00 a quarter from Canada.  My other, Synthroid is $27.00 a quarter there and about $150.00 a quarter here.

Re: Prescriptions - compare prices!

FYI the difference between the price of a 3 month supply and a one month supply of the same drug is negligible. I learned that from a pharmacist! This was a CVS pharmacist who was so disgusted with the prices that she left to work in a non-profit pharmacy.
Those are another option especially if you don't have insurance

Re: Prescriptions - compare prices!

I have not read all the responses, but wanted to say that I recently ordered my cat's Lantus pens from a Canadian pharmacy for a total of $179 which includes air shipping.

I paid $400 for the same prescription from Walgreens this past summer.

I've been ordering my own meds from Canada too.  They are just too expensive in the US.

Great service, no problems.
