Preparing for winter ice and snow

As many of you know my husband fell down stairs and fractured 3 vertebrae in his neck

When he went to his latest checkup ,with the Brain and  Spine Dr., he was given a warning about slipping on the ice and snow, while using a snow blower

This Dr has practiced for a long time, and has seen all kinds of injuries

He solemnly advised my husband ,to get some ice and snow cleats, for his shoes and boots. He  said that slipping on snow and ice ,can bring on as bad ,or worse injuries ,than the ones suffered by my husband, who is still healing from his fall, but out of the brace

We never thought much about  slipping and falling ,until after his accident

I got him  some ice and snow cleats on Amazon very reasonably, so be safe everyone.

I can vouch for it being very bad for a wrist when you try and stop that fall.  Don't do it!  Heed @cherry's good advice and give the medical care people some days off.

Glad to hear your husband is on the mend and you seem to be feeling much better too.  Heart   Enjoy your holidays!

Re: Preparing for winter ice and snow

@cherry, I'm so sorry to read of your husband's injury. Good to know he's on the mend. Please insist he wear the cleats and carries a charged cell phone every time he steps out, no exceptions.
I had an uncle who had a very bad slip and fall on ice, literally just a few steps from his own back door. He was there quite a while because he didn't carry a cell phone and his wife couldn't see him from the window.
It's wonderful that your Doctor is thinking ahead, and giving sage advise. Be safe!

@x Hedge  if this thread helps just one person avoid a catastrophic fall, it's time well spent

He carries his cell with him all the time, but, I will remind him all the same, and thank you

Re: Preparing for winter ice and snow

We have used the Due North ice cleats from here at QVC for many years now.

My mom and I wouldn't be without them.

I keep a pair in my car, should I be out and about and need them, plus I keep a pair of shoes in the shoe rack with a pair attached to put on on the way out the door when I know ahead of time it is snowy or icy outside.

They really do work, and give me such peace of mind, especially for my mom.

Falls on ice can happen in a split second, and can result in severe injury, including head injuries.

I've bought the extended size of these to go over the work boots for my son and husband, but being men, they don't use them like they should, and both have fallen on ice needlessly and haven't seem to learn their lesson.

@cherry

Sorry to hear your husband has already taken a pretty bad fall, and it really points out how important it is to protect ourselves in any way we can. These types of ice cleats are one simple way to do that, so thanks for the timely reminder.

Re: Preparing for winter ice and snow

@Mominohio  I didn't even think about Q selling them. They would make a great  Christmas gift

WE went to a few stores around us, and we found 1 pr that were too short  for him.

I ordered from Amazon, so I knew he would have some

Storms happen quickly in the Mitten, and it's good to prepare ahead

Re: Preparing for winter ice and snow

Just a suggestion.  Is it possible someone else could use the snowblower this year.  Or simply hire someone else to clear the snow.  I know when my husband fell on the track he was injured and we hired someone to take care of the yard (mowing and then snow blowing).  It was well worth it.

Re: Preparing for winter ice and snow

@bonnielu  You don''t know my husband..LOL  that's a resounding no.  It was all I could do ,to get him to let other people mow the lawn

The Dr is OK with it. He just wants him to watch his footing

Thanks for the suggestion

Re: Preparing for winter ice and snow

I always think about slipping on the ice during the winter! When my mom was still alive she always said that her main fear was falling. Those words have stuck with me.
