You aren’t doing anything wrong.
How did your find out that people were talking and what was said?

I would not worry about what the "haters" are saying...you have to do what's best for your home and property. It almost sounds as if the neighbor who has not spoken to you in years is dealing with a touch of "jealousy"...she will get over it!!
We are looking at estimates for a tree that is in our yard and so are many of our neighbors...Most of the trees are large oaks but there have been so many storms including Dorian that some of the trees in the neighborhood are leaning.

I don't blame you one bit for wanting to get a large tree removed that is too darned close to the house. And you have every right to cut back a neighbor's tree branches that are encroaching upon your property. (Just saw a case like this on Judge Judy).
Anyway, if the neighbor is concerned that their tree will then be top heavy towards their property, which is a valid concern, maybe they can have their tree trimmed on their side as well so that it looks symmetrical. Yes, it will cost some $$ but maybe they can get a deal by using the same guys that do the work on your property.
All trees eventually come down over the years. Usually by storms, doesn't have to be a hurricane either. Heavy rains, tornadoes, tree sickness, lightning, strong wind gusts and on and on. Neighbors should be happy they dodged a bullet w/Dorian.

Let me tell you my neighbor story. Two years ago, in late winter , my stockade fence, collapsed . It was very old and the frequent large branches from my neighbors dying tree didn’t help . While I was arranging to have the debris collected, and contracting for a new fence, when weather permitted , my spneighbors called the code enforcer. The fence fell entirely in my yard, and if they were so concerned about it, why not pay me a visit ? Believe me the enforcer got an earful . Their yard is disgusting, and I suspect they missed the fence, because of their dog. Well of course they got the nice side of the fence, and their rotting tree is still standing. Sorry, but I don’t even know these people, and I can’t believe their nerve. The new fence was worth every penny.

Not sure how the assessment of 'jealousy' on the part of the former friend figures in... Otherwise, the OP is within her rights. With respect to the tree on a neighbors property, I'd hope they were advised in advance and given the opportunity to address the matter themselves... If they weren't they probably should have been. If they were and didn't choose to address the situation then that's on them. The tree work aside, if a number of the neigbors seem to be put out at some level with the OP then there's more going on than we can know.

@Kimnola Your neighbor and mine are similar.
She had a split rail fence installed on the property line near my driveway to mark her line.
She put awful wire on my side and when I told her it should be on hers and they were doing a bad job she didn’t have time to talk to me.
We have been friends and traveled together. Both widows and I’ve taken care of her pets and mail AND her for 40 years!
I put up a 6’ privacy fence on my side. She planted shrubs as I did to hide fences. I’ve paid to have two of her dead trees removed. She would not.
There is a dead tree near my fence and mailbox. I told her it could fall on them and she passed it off. I e mailed her photos of it and no answer.
I’m contacting my insurance co because if a tree is dead and falls on my property and the owner has been sent a return receipt letter to that affect it’s their responsibility.
It never stops with her!
You have every right to trim the trees near your house! (LOL! She cut my shrubs in half to build her fence. )
I was afraid her tree would come down in Dorian and was really glad the storm didn’t do damage here, glad it missed you also!

Sounds like you are doing what you need to do. Carry on and try and be the better person and ignore the hateful talk. We have a neighbor behind us who I saw every morning when I would leave for work. Waved at her every morning for six months getting nothing in response but a glare. I finally just gave up and don’t even look in her direction. Some people aren’t happy in life unless they are unhappy in life.

If your neighbor is worried about their maple, then they can get it trimmed properly at their expense. Yes, if you only trim your side, it will make the tree unbalanced. But you are doing nothing wrong. Let them finish the job on their side.
