It really doesn't matter when YOU personally took antibiotics. The point is enough people world wide have taken them and they have been added to food to such a point that bacteria have become resistant to them creating super bugs. I always thought it only mattered how much I personally had taken antibiotics but my infectious disease doctor set me straight. Even if I never took antibiotics the bacteria itself has become stronger and more immune to antibiotics because of the overall use.

Here is an example in how much has changed in our food. Cows used to eat grass and grass was very good at eliminating ecoli. Our cows now mainly eat corn so we inject our cattle with antibiotics to avoid ecoli. If we put some grass back into their diet we could avoid the overuse of antibiotics when nature provided it in the grass they used to eat.

You can still buy grass fed beef. And it does matter to YOU personally because if you take precautions through smart diet choices you can keep from getting sick. I am always amazed at people who think they eat ""healthy"". And they are eating things made with corn and sugar by products. They are eating sweetners in their coffee or tea. They do not read labels and eat dairy products that have ""natural"" flavors in them as well as sugar. So if you take the time to read packages and research what is in the ingredients you can make better choices and at least help yourself to stay healthy.

Wrong.

Unfortunately, I had the opposite problem last year. I did have an infection and my dentist wouldn't prescribe an antibiotic until it was so bad that I was in excruciating pain.

I asked her twice about needing an antibiotic and her response was along the lines of this article - not wanting to give antibiotics so freely.

But, I was a patient who *did* need it.

Ugh. I'd be looking for a new dentist.

I'm seriously thinking about, tansy. Have been asking family & friends for recommendations.

Wrong.

Can you elaborate on that? Because I am not wrong. And that was really rude to just write off what I wrote with one word and no explanation.

From the article-The report examined resistance in the germs behind illnesses like pneumonia and urinary tract infections; the Telegraph cites routine surgery and common bladder infections in retirement homes as possible dangers of the future.

Again preventive. So where am I wrong? Maybe since I am still in my early forties I see this as a preventive. Or maybe because my Grandparents who did not eat processed foods and all lived well into their nineties as my barometer for health.

It actually matters very much when every individual takes antibiotics because collectively, people are creating an environment for resistant bacteria to form. To explain further for anyone who doesn't understand, the more instances where bacteria are exposed to an antibiotic, anytime, anywhere (that is, the more individuals taking antibiotics), the more likely the bacteria's DNA will be altered to become resistant to the antibiotic. It is a survival mechanism for the bacteria. If we create a hostile environment for bacteria BY TAKING antibiotics, they will morph, and already have morphed, into antibiotic-resistant strains. It is these strains that are killing people.

Twenty years ago, I was within minutes of death with a toxic megacolon, just from taking an antibiotic. The resistant bacteria overran my gut, multiplied, and set up an out of control infection. I had to have one foot of my colon removed for nothing. The ONLY reason I lived through this is because I was in excellent physical condition at the time.

It is the indiscriminate use of antibiotics that will cause more and more people to succumb to this sort of thing. I really don't know if most people just don't understand the concept or they do, but decide to shrug their shoulders and think it won't happen to them. It is a very serious problem. First, people need to stop asking for antibiotics and second, doctors need to stop prescribing. I am baffled by this non-compliance.

Lion, there is a way around this. A dentist can create an antibiotic pack to physically place right next to the tooth, kind of bandaging around the tooth or area that is infected. In this way, the antibiotic is locally absorbed as opposed to taking the antibiotic orally.

I agree on the grass fed beef and free range chicken. I have said on here before we actually go to a farm to get all of our poultry and same with beef. I don't eat a lot but my husband does and he buys half a cow and has it cut down and vacuum packed. The cows he purchases don't even eat any corn at all. We have even gotten to the point where we feed farm raised fish corn. When was the last time in nature you saw fish eating corn? We haven't bought any meat at a supermarket in years.

Collectively it is good that people don't take antibiotics when they don't need them but the superbugs are already out there.

I have had extreme problems with my immune system because of Crohns disease and I have have had these superbugs even after years of taking NO antibiotics at all. I have been hospitalized for weeks because of MRSA infections when I myself never took an antibiotic. That was my point. It wouldn't have mattered if I took an antibiotic or not because when I got a superbug I had to immediately be hospitalized and given the strongest IV antibiotic because my body couldn't fight it off despite never being on antibiotics.

I think people misunderstood my previous post. OF course it is good not to take antibiotics when you don't need them but to think that will protect you from a superbug is a fallacy. They are already here. There are lots of things that contribute to how strong these bugs have gotten and antibiotics and hand sanitizers are a major contributor.

Exactly. And hence my reply on what you eat.
