I have groomed one of my dogs, a poodle bichon mix. He did look a little scruffy at first (he liked that look). It did get better over time. There are plenty of instructional videos available.

Poodles are very smart, learn fast and have personality plus. I had a miniature that I groomed myself on the ironing board with a set of Walmart pet clippers. He looked pretty sad the first time but I rapidly improved with practice. Never had any of the disasters the groomer above posted about. He surely was a lot easier to care for than the big, long-haired collies I have now.I'd love to have a poodle myself because I find them really cute and adorable. But I'm so angry at my mum would never let me have one
she says they are really difficult to manage and I'll need to have special grooming for them. She doesn't want the hassle of grooming him, cleaning up his fur and yeah affording all this. This saddens me

I've been grooming my miniature schnauzer for 10 years. When we're out walking it's not uncommon for people to compliment her and ask me where I've had her groomed. Yes there are certainly up-front costs and you don't want to be cheap with the equipment if you want it to last and not hurt the dog (some clippers and blades get too hot too fast). You really have to do a lot of research first so that you know what you're doing. With all the online videos today that shouldn't be a problem. I had to buy a DVD about grooming my breed b/c YouTube didn't exist when I started.
I love doing my own grooming and I've saved a ton of $ by doing it myself. It's good bonding time and my dogs aren't stressed out about being left somewhere else. However, my dogs are angels on the table so that makes it a lot easier for me (I have 2 schnauzers now and I groom them both).
I don't doubt for a minute that there are a lot of stories of bad outcomes and problems like Wadzilla mentioned. I had a few minor mishaps when I first started but nothing serious. But there are success stories like me too. Everyone and every dog is different.

Just to add as a two time poodle owner, don't forget to pluck their ears if you do make a go of it yourself. They grow hair in there and it needs to be plucked as well as cleaned out.
When I did my own grooming, I only did the scissor cut. I was too afraid of clippers. My second Poodle had white nails so trimming was pretty easy without knicking her but I agree with "if you can afford it" give her and you a break and let the Pro do it. Poodles like to strut their stuff and they just know when it's done right and they look good. Millie and Gigi always strutted better after the Pro did them up rather than me.

I love that and it's so true. Not just of poodles either. My female dog starts moping around acting very droopy when she's shaggy and changes to perky and happy after being groomed. They know when they look good!
