Pomeranian knee surgery

Hi ladies, do any of you have experience with a surgery to correct a luxating patella? We adopted a dog that was used as a stud dog by a breeder ( he was taken away from her by the humane society) and he has had numerous medical problems. Vet is not sure he is a good candidate for surgery due to arthritis, so we are using meds to control pain and have started glucosamine. She will recheck him in 4 months to evaluate him for surgery. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
